It still has the original alkaline batteries that were installed when new. I tested the batteries about 6 months ago, and where still strong, so haven't replaced them yet.
I have a second one that is 6 months old. Original batteries still have like new charge.

I wouldn't recommend these for an exterior door. By the way it is made, especially the finish, it doesn't look like it would hold up very well exposed to the elements.
But great for interior doors, covered entryways, interior garage entry, etc.

Also the auto lock feather for this device could easily have had a sensor switch to detect the door jamb presence so it didn't auto lock with the door open.
