But when I did an in-store purchasing today, tax was calculated on (price - TIV_promo). According to the representative, this is because TIV_normal is processes as a GC and it has to be applied after the checkout, so the tax is charged on that part. Don't know if this is all true to CA or other states.

- I've done in-store trade-ins a few times at Best Buy. They only do a cursory look at the phone, to make sure it matches the color and condition. They don't care if it is carrier locked or is still being financed. -RonaldM

1. Go to the "Order Details" page for your order on bestbuy.com. This page likely says "Shipping Kit on its way" for the trade in status.
2. Open Developer Console in Chrome. Navigate to the "Networks" tab and reload the page.
3. Search for "trade" in the search box.
4. You should see 3 results - the third begins with "2002..." for me. Click on this one.
5. Click on "tradeInStatusInfo" -> "fulfillment" -> "tracking".
You will see the tracking number of the return shipping UPS label. You should also see a "isBoxShipped" field that likely reflects if your trade-in kit has shipped yet.

You're not taking advantage of anyone. Best Buy wants (and encourages) their customers to do these things. They know EXACTLY what they're doing and you're paying EXACTLY what they want you to.

1 good example is now you can't get your full enhanced trade in value in a gift card when you return a phone. before you were able to. let me check...ooopsss 70 reputation. da dude abides!

Seems the camera is the same, battery is smaller, one more year worth of updates, hopefully less bugs than Pixel 6.

Instead of giving you the cash from #1 they just use it to pay down #2, doesn't change the purchase price of #2 and hence no tax change.
Perhaps in some jurisdictions they consider it a lower purchase price, but that's not normally the case.
Also, in many cases where there's a seller "rebate" (such as a gift card) if you return the item, they only refund you the price you paid - what they already rebated you. So In Best Buy's case, if the phone is $900 with a $200 gift card (and a $45 return fee), would Might only expect to get back $650 or so on a return (though probably really 900+tax paid - $45 - $200)
