Nest and Google Cam products, along with aware service are the only ones (to my knowledge) that offer 24x7 cloud recording. While you can argue that isn't worth the $5 or $10 a month, you have to admit this is a pretty big feature that other cameras like the Ring don't offer. It is also consuming non free resources on the Google side (bandwidth in/out, and storage) which can explain the more expensive service cost. I'd say that of all of the times I needed to review some recording of a detected motion, being able to see what lead up to it, and what happened after was very important.

I've also had occasions where something didn't get caught via motion, but I was able to go back into time and find video of it due to the fact that they are always recording.

*Edit, it does look like more manufacturers are offering 24/7 recording now... Eufy, Alro, Waze can record locally, but it looks like only Arlo records 24/7 to the cloud, and they charge $14,99/month. Cloud storage is not cheap.

These have pretty high quality cameras that can run on 12 volts, via doorbell transformer, wall wart adapter or other creative means. If you already subscribe to nest aware it's free to add this to your subscription. Best of all it will work with the legacy Nest app which still works much better than the Google home app when you need to scroll through video history to find specific events.

If you want cameras that still work with the original nest app, this is one of the cheapest ways to get one.

It's $5 a month ($60 paid annually).
Many people will be spending considerably more than this ($5) daily on something frivolous.
How many bottles of coke or bags of chips do you buy in a week?

That's a ridiculous argument that I'm personally tired of hearing. Sure, any individual item you spend money on might be the same cost as a latte, but spending on a lot of them soon adds up... death by a 1000 cuts. You also need to look at relative value. A Ring doorbell costs $40/year so why is this one 25% more expensive given that you don't get anything more or different? And even for Ring, I use their service for maybe a few seconds once or twice a day... is that worth it to me? Having cancelled it I realized that life goes on as it did before and I've $40 more in my pocket to spend on stuff I actually value.

BTW if you listen to local NPR radio you'll hear this all the time. "For just a couple of latte's a month you can become a member...". What they're actually asking is that you give them $10/month which is a much harder sell given that many video streaming services cost around that, and people may value those more than they do the radio.

24/7 recording is worth much more to me than the awful motion triggered recording from Eufy or other products. I've missed so many interactions because of it. While I have a mix of products for recording around the house, the doorbell camera is really important and deserves 24 hour recording to the cloud (considering how vulnerable it is).

w/o sub, I think you still get 3 hours or rolling video. So as long as you check updates with the 3 hours of your nest triggering, you can review the video. Not sure if there's s way to save a video segment of your choosing though. Can anyone comment?

24/7 recording is a benefit that others don't have. to each their own but motion sensor doesn't provide much value. sometimes people scout and motion sensors won't pick them up.
