I got a refurbished iPhone Xr last spring from TF. It didn't unlock after 60 days, I was told that the device was initially activated before 11/23/2021. For devices activated prior to that date the minimum service requirement is 1 year. could not get Cr to budge. In June I traded it (still locked to TF) in for $700 off iPhone 13 Pro max on ATT at Costco without any issues.
Battery health was 100%
Some people mention a bad replacement screen on reconditioned TF iPhones - I didn't notice any issues with screen.
In August I got another reconditioned XR with $50 off promo (6000 TF rewards points) primarily as a backup for kids when they will eventually break their iPhones. The screen felt a little laggy on that one, not sure if this is due to replacement screen. Battery health still 100%

Do I need to text anything to unlock the phone? I recall I need to text UNLOCK to certain number to activate the 60 day timer.

No, the 60 day timer starts when you activate the line. Texting UNLOCK to 611611 just tells you when the phone is scheduled to unlock.

Just make sure you actually activate the line / SIM and not just the phone / Apple activation.. It should be quick and easy to do online. Probably a good idea to test with a call your main phone or something.

made the mistake of updating to ios16. touchscreen stopped working.Apple wont fix since screens are third party.
if you cannot update sw, the phones are defective. But really hard to get any help from tracfone for exchange or refund.

Wish I had seen this earlier. I did factory reset and now cannot swipe to get past the hello screen.
itunes restore did not complete for me.
apple store did complete restore via USB cable but didn't help. if I can go to previous version, it might solve the problem.
any suggestions on repair apps? ideally
free ones.

My Xr came in the mail and all is well. Texted unlock and it's slated to unlock in 60-days.

Question, Tracfone provided me with a USB-A 5w charger but a USB-C to Lightning cable.

Anyone else get the same setup? And any luck getting Tracfone to help?

I reached and they said per website we should get only phone and cable. Adapter should not have been on the box. Even when everyone received it

I missed this deal but I think I will get the new one for 179 with my $150 coupon. even tho its more expensive I will still come out ahead for using it for the bestbuy pixel trade in

should I get the $15 plan? Do I need to activate it before trade in?

No, plan purchase is not required for the new iPhone XR, so you can just skip. The final cost will be $179.99 - $150 (14,000 points) = $29.99+tax.
You do not need to activate it for trade-in purpose.
