Any use of a laser without an enclosure is both irresponsible and dangerous. Looks up the Youtube safety reviews on open frame lasers like this. Good luck burning down the house or blinding everyone from the reflections of the invisible laser light you can't see.

The laser cutter is 5.5W NOT 40W!! Day and night difference.
Please update your title.
I use an Epilog 50W that costs north of $15K for work, no way this is a 40W laser.

You could duct tape/zip tie a pen to it, but it doesn't have a z-axis so it would never lift the pen off the paper.

It sounds like what you really want is a pen plotter. You could take a vinyl cutter and swap out the tool, or modify a 3D (FFF) printer.

Cricut seems to be the company to avoid here, apparently, for their razor blade business model and propensity for abusing the DMCA to stifle 3rd party software.
