A snake would be much more effective and also cheaper.

These have NEVER worked for me. A snake and other methods are a lot more effective. How are these companies still in business? Because people are hopeful suckers hoping to fix their issue for $10 vs $300 calling a plumber. But now you've spent $310 now.

These are generally useless, just go to your local hardware store and get a bottle of "industrial"/"pro" grade acid (usually it's the bottle that is also packed in double ziploc bag, that's how you know it's the one).

If you own your home, don't use these in your plumbing.

Simply put, anything that dissolves the gunk can dissolve the pipe too.

Now, that depends on the materials used in your house and the stuff in that bottle. There is also your stack (big vertical pipe in the basement usually metal) plus whatever takes it to the street as well so think bigger.
Regardless, logically think about that. It's going to dissolve anything.

Lye is something that dissolves organics as opposed to an acid. Subtle but important difference.

If you use lye, be careful. Need to know why? Fight Club.

totally agree. lye eats up metal pipe. avoid at all cost.
