Greetings
The RAM on the GWNC31514 can not be upgraded because it is built in to the motherboard. If any additional help is required with our products, please reach out to us via chat on www.gatewayusa.com, by phone at 1-877-777-0649 or email us at [email protected]. Our agents will gladly assist you.
This processor would be fine for her, but the ram should be 8gb and the ssd should be 256gb minimum. More would be a plus. You'll definitely be able to get something serviceable for $300, especially with BF on the horizon. Additional things to look for are a backlit keyboard and a usb-c port that powers the computer. Try to get a screen with at least 300 nits brightness if you can, but def not less than 250. All the above will make for a computer you don't want to replace in less than a year or two.
Edit: And check that the battery life is long enough. Does it need to make it through an school day? Or just until it can be plugged in somewhere? I have two old laptops that originally came with win8 on them that I still use occasionally and the batteries were never good. Maybe worked a couple hours on battery before quitting. Most computers will last at least four hours or so today, but many will go much longer.
The more boxes you check off from the above, the longer that computer remains usable and out of a landfill.
Another edit: look for FHD screens with IPS panels. And if you're shopping on SD exclusively you'll see people talking about all these things very early in the thread. They'll say stuff like "250 nits, meh!" Or "TN panel in 2022!?" Or "4gb ram, can it even open teh tabs?!" If you see a lot of thumbs up going on and people noting that it's checking off the spec boxes you care about, pull the trigger before it's gone.
I got in on that $100 yoga flex deal back in July and the computer only had 4gb ram on it. I know it sounds nutty but it managed to keep the ram use down around 2gb at baseline and below 4gb during browsing. People explained how it did it in the thread, but that was only after a clean install of windows and not out of the box. Perhaps this computer would do similarly, but I'd still pass. I ended up returning that computer because it was just too small.
Interesting. I suppose it's possible but it's incredibly aggravating because a $25 stick of RAM would make it a fantastic basic laptop, but they left out that ability.
Thank you all for the feedback. I was thinking of getting this for my daughter bc she likes the screen size over her chromebook. Only using it for middle school. No gaming, streaming shows, Google docs, ect. What would be good minimum specs to look for??? Willing to spend up to 300
Much better options for $300. Just search around SD. If nothing at the moment, then just keep a lookout. Laptop deals are a dime a dozen around here.
Windows 10/11 on 4gb of ram? Oh the pain. And 128gb? A year's worth of windows updates and you're out of disk space. And I bet a dollar it's not even a real ssd, probably emmc which is terrible.
Aim higher. There is another gateway deal on there for 300 that is light years better than this. And it's still not great.

I mean if you're going to go barebones linux needs just buy a used Dell for $100. But yeah you should be able to load whatever you want IF you can turn off secure boot and TPM security in BIOS. Which... isn't a guarantee on something like this.
This is almost netbook price. If this was $100, this could be a front page deal....lol
Actually, you would be surprised at how usable 4GB can be when implemented with pagefile on an average m2 or sata ssd. I have the acer $193 deal and that comes with 4GB ram and 128GB. and i didn't upgrade the ram at all. And my parents are merrily using it without problem for basic tasks. The overall experience is much better than what it used to be with page file on an old hdd. Just make sure you let windows do the space clean up after each update so it doesn't keep taking up space on the ssd.
I am almost quite sure that this has m2 sata and not emmc ssd
But then again, if you have the $193 acer alternative for only $20 more that has a proper sodimm slot and just overall better, then why bother with this?

Wait for a better laptop such as the HP Ryzen 3 8GB ram and 128SSD for $200 at best buy. Amazon matches that price as well. I got one on last time sale and loved it.
