It is better than 11th Gen i5. For 12th gen, around i5-1235U. Around 15-20% slower in single core and 15 to 20% faster in multi core.

Just purchased an open box Asus ZenBook (8gb ram soldered) with dedicated Nvidia GeForce MX450. Debating if I should return the Asus and grab this. Fact that ram is upgradeable is tempting me. But the integrated graphics card in the Asus...decisions decisions

it'll be better for gaming. simple as that. The integrated can push 720p-1080p low settings 30-60fps on most titles. The mx450 would probably run 1080p low-medium around 30-60fps

I second the Best Buy open box shopping. I've purchased around 10 laptops that way over the years. Of course, you have to keep checking. Sale price of non open box version affects open box price. And then stock changes a lot.

Here's a laptop with very similar specs to OP. Main difference being 17" screen, brand is HP, no backlit keyboard. Slightly cheaper at $347 for open box excellent.

And for what looks like a nice entry/mid level gaming laptop option - Dell G15 with a GTX 3050 and 110Hz screen for $443 open box excellent.

Just my personal picks if I wanted to pick up a laptop today for under $450 (in my area). Peace

I'm out of the loop a bit. How would that gaming laptop be for a school laptop that would only be used at home?

If you don't need to carry it around, it's an excellent laptop. It has GTX3050 so more than capable of handling most games and graphic software. Best spec per price I've seen in a laptop if you can get the excellent condition one.

The big debate always is, do you want a laptop that you can carry around that can also game and do graphic work? Or do you actually need a gaming machine and a separate work laptop you can easily carry around.

I have an Acer Swift X which has similar specs but almost double the price. Big difference is the weight. Swift X is a beast of a machine considering its portability(3.31lbs) compared to the Dell G15(5.4lbs)

I bought this one from Best Buy as well. I used it on a month-long work trip and the dedicated but efficient GPU really did well. The CPU is surprisingly powerful. I also bought a 2TB Inland NVMe to replace the 256GB drive. When mobile it's a good desktop replacement that also fits in my Macbook 13.3" cases.

Does this come with one 8gb DDR4 module and is there a free slot for another one?

If so, would this be a good choice?

It would be for my 10 year old kid who needs a computer for school. He's using my old laptop that I bought in 2011. I figured I would get him something newer. I think being a gaming laptop would be a plus. It would stay at home so weight doesn't matter but I have heard the screens used for gaming laptops are not that great with text.
