The SE 1st gen came out in 2020. Are you saying it came out with 7-8 year old technology?

The first generation SE was a major step up from Series 3. I have one still and it doesn't struggle at all like the Series 3 does. I'd say it's still more than enough for someone who just wants a basic smart watch for notifications, workouts and sleep tracking. Mine is going on two years and the battery still lasts all day long.

Even though the second-gen SE has a newer chip, you likely wouldn't notice the difference. The Apple Watch doesn't need much processing power. The only major thing the new one has over the first gen is the Crash Detection feature.

You're wrong. 1st gen SE has the same processor as the Series 5. The new SE has the 8th gen processor. This 1st gen SE is a Series 5 without ECG sensor and always on retina display. The SE2 is an S8 without the ECG, blood O2 sensors, and always on display.
Edit: the SE 2 DOES have crash detection.

It's not. Get the new SE. for $50 more you have basically a series 5 or something like that

Edit: assuming you don't need cellular. Your nephew would need a service line for the watch if you get him it to use with cellular service

I think I need cellular for Family Setup. I'm not an Apple user so not too sure.

Ah okay, regardless, I don't think it's worth it for you to get this since the technology is 7-8 years old.

Get the newest Apple Watch SE.
It's $300 for the cellular model, and the features are more aligned with current tech

Perfect timing. Was just looking for a deal on a cellular Apple Watch for my kid. He's too young for a phone but I need to be able to contact him as he's in after school programs.

Would this cellular work in the UK? Taking the kid there and thought this might be good to keep communication.

It's base on way older tech. I would rate it closer to the series 3 that is pretty much close to dead.
I would rate it closer to series 5. I have a 3 and this SE seems like a step up, though a small step.
I agree that the series 3 is essentially dead and not really usable at this point.

Agreed in fact my SS S4 still runs like a champ I compared to my wife's s7 and only difference is oxygen sensor that is never used and I like that my watch does not have always on display battery lasts 2+ days without charge.

You're right. The first gen SE is a Series 5 without ECG and always on display. It's definitely not a Series 3. The SE 2, and the Series 8 for that matter, aren't noticeably faster in use. The Series 5 and Series 8 just have a few added features that most people never use. The SE is the better option for most people, unless you really need the ECG, blood O² sensor, AOD, and crash detection.
