Keep in mind that this is probably half way through its support life. The longest support so far has been 4 years 11 months, with the 1st gen SE being at 2 years 9 months now. At least from a CPU perspective, it matches the Series 5 which has been out for 3 years 9 months.
Anyway, currently supported but probably at least half way through its life.
Nice deal - $139, even cheaper than the forever supply of $149 1st gen SE watches from Walmart, but this time includes cellular capability.
This watch can be used in place of giving your younger kid an easy to lose or break smartphone. You can set this up with its own number from your iPhone and it does not need to be tethered to an iPhone. That means two way texting and calling as well as location tracking of your kid. For $139 + typically $10/month for that new phone number.
Note, you can ignore the cellular capability of you like and simply use it tethered to your iPhone. (No need to activate it separately with your carrier in that use case.)
Just because it isn't getting updates doesn't mean it's useless either. My wife is still perfectly happy with her series 3 that is now out of support. Still works fine with her existing iPhone even with it's updated iOS and does everything she wants to do with it.

Great deal. Got this for my daughter's first "phone" and so far has been excellent. You absolutely can get a separate number for this and use it for kids if you don't want them to have the full capabilities of a phone but can still talk/text and be tracked.

Also keep in mind that watches tend to take a much harder beating so their physical life expectancy might not be as long. Your situation - for example a rambunctious kid - might vary…

Does the battery really get through a full day with cellular on? I feel like my series 4 used to lose like half its power if I went on cellular while biking for a couple of hours. If a kid wakes up 6AM, would this stay charged through 9PM?

She has yet to have it at school due to getting it at the beginning of summer. I believe it will last the full day at school but we will see in a few weeks if that holds true. For now being mostly at home it last all day.

I bought this watch for my mother for Mother's Day and it has been great.
We needed cellular so that she can leave her phone behind when walking or working outside.
I was planning to take advantage of a TMO deal on the SE second gen but mom's iPhone is too old for that - 6s Plus - so I needed to get the first gen SE. No regrets at all. This is an amazing deal and great for anyone with an older iPhone.

My kids have this and it barely lasts until the afternoon. That's the biggest downside to the 40mm vs the 44mm
I read on WM reviews the 1st gen can also make /receive calls? Would you buy this over gen2 that usually sells for 199 on sale every few months? $50 extra but i realize the 199 gen2 is not cellular, this gen1 is cellular but I won't have any use for it

Why get a device like this for first phone? Why not get her one of those metro by t-mobile deals? Or even an add a line deal or spare phone at home?
