Exposed to this way back in high school, it's crossed my path many times.

The interview series with Bill Moyers is a great companion and probably can be found on YouTube.

Campbell explains his perspective on psychoanalyzing the world's myths and religion—they are all telling the same stories. How we live, how we are a part of eternity and how this is our moment to be alive. We will be "one with God" or eternity again when we die. But our time "now" is what is a manifestation of all that will be and all that has been.

This is more academic or philosophical than "self help".

This guy is a chauvinist goober. All his supposed comparisons fall completely apart with even the slightest semblance of a deeper knowledge of the source material. He thinks that all good stories from history are "apolitical" which is just in its face ridiculous. Oh, and he felt that anti Nazi fervor was foolish... During WWII.

He's actually right that stories are usually apolitical. The great stories are *philosophical*.

Politics is shallow. Philosophy looks deeper.

That definition of politics is shallow, and it's just not true about stories. The Bible, the most famous philosophical literature on the planet is filled with politics. Just because a works politics are less relevant doesn't strip it of the social commentary quality. I contest you to provide a great work of literature that is apolitical.

"You must not allow yourself to be tricked into believing that social criticism is proper art." -Joseph Campbell

seriously lol. does that sound right? to anyone? his media literacy is baffling

From stories of the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece and Rome
Atra-Hasis and the epic of Gilgamesh are much earlier than that, I hope discussion of the great flood myth isn't confined to what can be found in the more recent book of Genesis.

I was going to pass to but now I'm interested. Usually when people scream "anti-semitism" and "mysogyny" they're trying to poison the well and keep you from learning something valuable.
