I've been eyeing this for a bit to come back in stock, but I believe the big "problem" on this model is that the 3070 is the underpowered version that is no better, and potentially worse, than a 3060.

It is in fact. 105W max 3070. It'll lose to the 130W 3060s.

Graphics:NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3070 Laptop GPU, 1340MHz* at 105W (1290MHz Boost Clock+50MHz OC, 80W+25W Dynamic Boost), 8GB GDDR6;

Edit: To be fair it still has 8GB VRAM. I'm sure there are scenarios where this may be more useful. It's not terrible for the price, but the display and GPU are a little lacking. But you get ASUS build quality. I'd still take it over the faster Acer or Gigabyte models in the range, but the $1,100 G15 Advantage is a way better deal.

Thanks for breaking it down like that!

You seem to have a good finger on the pulse. I use my laptop to capture game footage from consoles to stream. Looking to upgrade from a ryzen 3550h/GTX 1050 to something. I'd prefer to stick with an NVIDIA GPU due to Nvenc as that seems to really help if and when I do stream games from the computer as well.

Ok so all that said, yes I love the looks of the G15, but AMD GPU etc. Would you suggest this laptop for my use-case, or would I be ok with one of the Acers with a larger screen, but the smaller vram (but also power use) of the RTX 3050? I like the flexibility with my real-hardware setup of a laptop so using my desktop is kind of out.

Sorry if that's complicated, appreciate the feedback regardless!

Edit: Went with it. Weighed the options and I think for my needs and wants this is the best bet. Even if there's 3060 deals, I just trust ASUS laptops more (my current tuf is going on 4 years!) and the 8gb VRAM should be plenty for the biggest need.

A gigabyte laptop went for around 700 a few days ago featuring a 130W 3060 and a much better screen.

Indeed 105 watts tdp on the 3070 is lacking but still, the 3070 mobile has more cudacores and it is 8gb vram than 3060 mobile.

How does this one compare to the Lenovo Ideapad 3i below? Considering a lower cost budget gaming laptop myself currently.

I assume there'll be some deal this holiday season.

Thanks for any thoughts to you or anyone else who can help.

Obviously just anecdotal, but the last good product I purchased from Asus was a mobo from like 20 years ago. Build quality has gotten extremely awful for a manufacturer that was definitely known for quality back in the days. From an ROG laptop with a failed solder joint on the power connector to a mesh wifi system that can't go a single day without losing connection and hard failing to the point of not being able to recover without a reset and no indication of problems in the logs. IMHO They are a garbage company that I will never purchase a product from again. Lenovo has been pretty solid lately. The legions are solid if you are looking for a gaming laptop.

You won't be disappointed in it. With what you're doing you don't need the super high wattage GPU. This honestly has better perf/watt than the 130 watt 3060s anyway. It's a solid ASUS laptop.

It is a way better deal. I got one for my GF and it even beats my locked to 100w 3080 because it starts to overheat and needs to throttle a bit after about 30 minutes. These are wattage limited because of overheating. Bypassing the wattage limitations if you can doesn't help, allot of the time, they can't even run at the reduced maximum wattage for any serious amount of time.

You need a really premium cooling solution to get close to the benchmark numbers for real world use. Just because it says 150w, doesn't mean it's not going to start thermal throttling. The ampere chips are amazing but they are dense and have quick voltage and thermal spikes, it's allot less of an issue in a desktop.

That Strix runs fairly cool for hours and if your not gaming, the battery lasts for several hours like it's not even a gaming laptop.

For video editing and taking advantage of the Cuda Cores to accelerate Adobe Premiere, is the lower wattage typically an issue?

The specs on this are tempting but I passed on this in favor of the Asus M16 open box excellent at $1230 last Sunday because the screen on this unit is 250 nits, 1920 x 1080, and 45% NTSC whereas the M16 is 500 nits, 2560 x 1600 and 72% NTSC. But maybe if you use an external monitor this is a better deal.

That was likely the Gigabyte A5 K1 and it was $729. It's going to be that price on Newegg during their BF promo.

This has a 250 nit screen. Based on specs, it's likely going to be fairly dark and dim no?

Anyone have any personal experience with this screen?
