*Official* Android OS Phone Chat, Questions, & Help Thread -

14,178 1,195 October 22, 2009 at 06:05 PM in Chat
Yahoo!

Our very own thread to discuss and chat about the OS, ROM's, apps from Android Market, our Android phones, tips & tricks, questions, and help issues. With the different phones out now and to be released from various carriers, I figure we all have a lot in common with the Android OS. We can discuss what we like, need help with, what apps are cool or don't work well, as well as questions and help issues. Given that CSR's from the various carriers may know less than we do, this thread is for all of us so we can help one another.

Great timing on the thread!.

I'm on Sprint and looking at upgrading. Played with the Hero a bit but don't like the onscreen keyboard. I tried and tried but kept farkingup text entry.

Dzap told me about the Samsung Moment coming out and also the HTC HD2. On the Moment, seems that it just has basic Android with Google something or other. As everyone else seems to be skinning the Android UI, I wonder what I would be missing with the Moment.

HD2 looks awesome but it runs WM6.5 though it's skinned with SenseUI but I don't think it has a real keyboard either. Frown

I just don't know which way to go and guess I won't until I can play with all three phones in a store somewhere. Smilie

Did you try turning the Hero sideways to type?

Yeah, still fat fingered it, though not as badly. Perhaps I would get better with it over time, but I tried for a few minutes and had typos all over the place.

Oh, might have to go mess with it again and try a diff keyboard.

Think I might also abuse Sprint's 30 day thing. Just get the Hero, play with it until the Moment comes out, then see what happens from there.

Something just dawned on me.......a lot of my music files are in the lossless FLAC format, so these won't play on the HTC Hero/Android music player if I transfer them all over to the microSD, right?
You are correct.

I understand the need to not have to maintain multiple formats of your music library though.

Good for you sweetie, you got a Hero!!! I love mine! (all of them!) Wife wanted one too, so we got her one as well. For the force close on some apps, I have not had a big problem, but I read the comments people left when they rated the app. If there are a lot of comments about force close or someone specifically says the app does not work on the Hero, then I find a similar app with better reviews.

Q-Bert provided a linly for the Marketplace on the interwebs, so it it easier and faster to search for and find apps you want. Here - linly [cyrket.com] The reviews are there, and I have found the site to be the same as Marketplace. The apps have the QR code so you can just use the Barcode Scanner app to take a pic and go directly to that app on your Hero. Kewl, huh? woot

For your keyboard, you can calibrate it to be less touchy. Personally I use a pretty light touch and don't make a huge number of mistakes, but it took a few times to calibrate it before it got to where I want it.

How to from HTC Support -

Quote from HTC Support :
Q. How can I make the keyboard more finger friendly?

One option is to adjust the calibration for the keyboard. go to HOME > MENU > Settings > Locale& text > Touch Input > Text Input > Calibration tool. You can also choose to have the device vibrate/give sound feedback when the keyboard is pressed as well as enable/disable calibration..

Darn, that's what I was afraid of! Now I'll have to copy and convert FLAC files to MP3. Oh well, it'll be a project for my son to do.

"Oh SONNNNN!!!!! C'mere, I've got something for ya to do!"
