Someone here on Slickdeals commented the same thing before and I thought it was just that person or they were exaggerating. Nope. According to the multiple Amazon reps I spoke with this is standard practice for Apple products.

Here is my story.
I had told myself 1-2 months ago that if I want to get my money worth on the iPad, it better has a decent specs in the long run or else I would be upgrading prematurely which defeats the purpose of Slickdeals anyways. The iPad must compliment well with my iPhone SE 2016 being my daily driver.
iPad mini 6th gen. Too small and too expensive for my likings. It just nearly big as a large smartphone. I don't want a ph-ablet and that variant RARELY goes on sale (have yet seen price drops below $400 anyways).
Then i start at the top; 12.9' Pro' variant. I was happy with it except….yes, you got it right….the $850 price point. Returned.
I went down the segment to Air 4 for $350 from Walmart and I was semi-satisfied except it wasn't the latest model. Guess the only thing that made me happy is the price point more than the decent specs. Best non-M1 iPad out there iMO. Returned.
I went up to 11' M2 iPad Pro for $600 brand new and I thought I was happy with it until I realized that it didn't have the mini OLED screen and HDR capability. I want to watch movies and stream real time content. Plus the size is just the same as the Air 4. Returned.
I went down all the way to the 9th gen iPad for $220 and I was 95% happy with it especially the price point, weight, and when it has a headphone jack that allows me to do basic consumption privately. I simply love wired headphone without a meaningless adapter and a nice "pick me up" consumption without having to worry about trade off in terms of usage on bed, couch, anywhere and a vintage design. However, I realized I will be needing to be productive from time to time outside of media consumption.
9th gen iPad for $220 vs M1 12.9 Pro variant 256GB for $737 with gift cards to burn.
I ultimately went with the latter so that I won't have to upgrade prematurely and I can live without the headphone jack port. It the iPadOS experience that matters to me the most as I want to enjoy with the help of Magic Keyboard and large screen state. I know I can't be too cheap nor accept compromise when it comes to expensive iPad especially when I will be doing something more than just the basic.
I don't even have a macbook to begin with so it a no brainer.
MAYBE….JUST MAYBE I could get a used 9th gen iPad for cheap as $200 or less in the distant future as a cheap backup iPad if I ever need to take it with me away from home? I simply want to keep the 12.9 variant home. It one less thing for me to worry about given the weight, space, and portability, and no, I don't nor will be having apple care as I know how to take care of my personal belongings.

My workflow? Shopping online, checking Mint, my retirement accounts (apps), and calling grandparents (so camera placement was actually a winning thing here).
