I have 3 of these and have been very happy with them, but there are a few things worth mentioning

The thermal tolerances on these is pretty poor IMO. Don't plan to use it in any non-conditioned space, putting it in a garage in any temperature above 85F and it will start with random reboots and eventually fail.
There is no cross compatibility with anything else in the AmpliFi line or in the Ubiquiti line. These Aliens only mesh with other Aliens. There is also something called a "mesh kit" that I would avoid, it includes another Alien without an LCD that is firmware locked to only be a mesh node.
I had one issue with one and customer service was super solid, so happy there.
If you are technically minded and want to do advanced stuff, I would really recommend you take a peek at Ubiquti devices. This is a great consumer grade router, but it isn't much more than that.
The same statement above is true for Smart Home folks, Ubiquiti has a solid smart home line but again those devices wont work with the Alien.
The range on these is solid, but its not massive leaps and bounds above other stuff on the market. In my opinion if you are approaching needing any more than 2 of these, it isn't worth the price. My two level, 2200 sqft house needs 2.
These devices do not have a dedicated backhaul, meaning that the communication of the mesh nodes is happening on the same band as connected devices. There is a small performance cost to that, but it hasn't been an issue for me. If wired backhaul is an option that's always recommended.

I'm guessing they're going to release the 6E version soon and that's why this is on sale. Just an educated guess.

I had one of these for a bit and returned it. Couldn't justify the price and while it's aesthetically pleasing, I did not find it had any performance gains over my old AC1750.

Can anyone confirm how these stack up to Netgear?

These are great, I have three in my house currently. There is a kit with the router and mesh point (no LCD, less ethernet ports) but for additional mesh points you need another router.

Already have two of these and they work great! Always get around 900+ up/down on wired and 800+ up/down on Wifi 6. Getting a third one for additional coverage.

Has anyone tried ordering online for pick up, then going to store with old router to get 15% off coupon and apply it to the order?

Honestly the best router money can buy. I am not being paid to say this. I have tried every other router out there but this has been hands down the best ever. No dropped connections or list of Wi-Fi or anything. Been rock solid 1 year with no issues. I have 1 gb connection and get around 945 on Wi-Fi with IPhone 14

It better to just buy two of these rather than the additional Mesh Point

Very stable, Excellent router and great to use as mesh also. Up and down closer to 900mb. Very silent. Adds VPN path to your home network when you are on public Wi-Fi so you are secure. Also can test speed from the touch screen in the router and see which ones on your network are connected.

I have the $240 Orbi Pro kit (two devices) sitting at my house in the box.. this is from a recent sale. Is this better enough hardware that I'd want to spend $500 for two of them? I'm only on 300mbps up/down fios. I get 100-130mbps on my tp link m9 plus setup consistently throughout the house.

I've heard the amplifi alien is the best hardware but $500 for 2 devices is pretty steep considering we don't plan to jump to 1gig. I just need better handling of all my smart home stuff
