Xbox One S also won't play about 1/3 of the 4k UHD Blu-rays that I own. It just throws an error. Panasonic has no problem with the same discs.
This comment always comes up with these high end 4K player deals. There's a lot that benefit a home theater nut with a good sound system and top end flagship TV while an Xbox One S won't push that higher end picture and sound. It's like saying why buy a Ferrari/Lambo when you can get a Porsche or a SUV that can get you to places.
Dolby Vision - this is the high selling point
HCX
Studio Master Sound
HLG

Overall higher bitrate with much better PQ paired with the latest TV technologies. Suppose you want the best PQ. It's a no-brainer.

Why not just get a Xbox One S? It should be much cheaper now, and it's actually a good Blu-Ray player
I could be wrong, but I don't believe either console supports Dolby Vision from disks, only from streaming services. That was a big motivator for me.

Is Dolby vision really worth the $200+ premium over the UB420? Or is there another difference that justifies the price?

I ended up buying an open box 420 for $160 and have been very pleased but I am wondering if maybe I should upgrade. But can't really see Dolby Vision being worth $200+ more.

Probably not worth the upgrade. You got a sweet deal on that UB420. If you had no player, then the answer would be to jump on this deal instead.

If you bought a LG or sony OLED...yea, thats sort of the point of buying those premium tvs.

If you dont want dolby vision...should have just bought samsung and have better brightness Wink

Why are they not less expensive by now. Great machines have one and yes they are needed for a system but the price just gets me. Oh well

Because they picked Blu Ray over DVD-HD. Never go with the Sony option if price matters.

I agree with all the comments on the benefits of this but I hesitate to get a blu-ray player released in 2018. I guess if it supports all the latest audio and video standards that's all that matters.

Get what your saying in particular to tech though thankfully, there really hasn't been any other major iterative changes necessary/needed hardware wise. This uhd/br player thankfully allows updates so your don't have to "upgrade" every two years now lol

Buy a LG bluray player but never buy a panasonic one. I bought a panasonic player last year and already regretting it.

Was it this model? If you bought a cheap player and it broke on you, it doesn't make every single Panasonic player (especially this top model) a bad one

I used this player with an LG OLED C9 65 and see no difference in terms of picture quality between 4K disc and streaming on Apple TV. Not worth the upgrade in my case.
You must be too far from your tv for the size, I can spot streaming defects all the time and its to the point where its like looking at non-HDR vs HDR content.

May want to check your set up and ensure correct cables from bluray/passthrough is working right from player to receiver to TV

Great player. Bought this a couple of years ago to go with my LG CX and it's been a great combo for the last two years. Haven't had any issues with any discs that I put in it and I run it through my Denon so I get the great sound along with an awesome picture that never buffers or skips and looks like it should. Would definitely recommend, especially since these are becoming more and more rare and only a few companies are making ones that will last you for a long time, like this one should.

It is the same model. The menu and controls are so old fashioned that it takes 10 mins to figure out how to play a movie.
