I also set mine up last week and managed to get the Echelon proprietary apps off the tablet using some of the information posted here [xda-developers.com]. Note that this is not a simple, quick or necessarily straightforward process, but the end result should be a tablet that still connects to the bike and can be configured with 3rd party apps.

I had no intention of using the Echelon app simply because 99% of it's functionality is tailored toward having a subscription. As soon as I saw the freestyle window as a full screen ad with a tiny stats bar at the bottom, I knew that app was coming off. There's supposed to be a way to re-load the Echelon app if you want to keep using it but I haven't figured that out yet.

I paid for the qdomyos-zwift app off the Amazon appstore and installed that on the tablet instead. It has a relatively basic interface but displays all the important info I need (cadence, speed, resistance level, etc.). It's also able to interact with the Peleton app if desired, which I hear good things about. For now, I have Plex & YouTube Vanced loaded on the tablet and run that with the qdomyos-zwift app in the background or in split screen.

EDIT: I was finally able to re-load the Echelon app after following step 5 on post 532 [xda-developers.com]. Installing the app this way allows you to do everything the stock Echelon app would (including update the bike itself) but will not firmware update the tablet and lock it back down in the process.
if you are interested in buying this or you've already bought it, check this thread out
https://forum.xda-developers.com/...m.4023915/

it shows you how to hack the echelon tablet to install the apps you like, and also to split the screen to display qdomyos-zwift and peleton app together, so you can enjoy the peleton app with a more reasonable monthly fee
YES! Right on time! I was running out of places to hang all my black Friday clothes.

Ex4 has auto resistance which will help you to follow exercise video and video tracks
Can be changed manually with the knob so no biggie there.

Just to confirm the version linked here on Walmart (the ECH-SPORT-S) does have a cadence sensor in it, but the resistance is manual correct? This thread has several bikes mentioned but it seemed like you actually owned the bike being linked.

Thank you for posting the direct link to xda-developers in a later thread, I pulled the trigger because of this and will report back with my success/failure.

**EDIT** This thing worked like a CHAMP, see my guide later in the thread

Yes, it does measure cadence but I don't believe the Sport-S has auto resistance. The qdoyos-zwift documentation [github.com] also lists the EX-15/Sport as not having auto resistance, so I feel like this is an accurate statement.

The Sport-S looks like an EX-15 with an added tablet, so I'd expect the features to be almost identical. The EX-15 doesn't have auto resistance so it makes sense that the Sport-S wouldn't either.

The qdoyos-zwift compatibility chart does mention that "Auto Resistance can be added with 3rd party hardware." but I have no clue what this means. I haven't been able to find any information on how this works or what's needed to actually do it.

I'm still not clear on what exactly can be done in freestyle mode. This geriatric millennial just wants a simple but well-built bike with basic programmable resistance/durations and some general stats. Is this all available in freestyle mode or do I HAVE to pay for the subscription? And do the ads persist the entire ride?
Freestyle mode is basically just your stats (cadence max/min, resistance max/min, output in watts max/min, speed, distance, calories burned, etc.) in a small bar at the bottom of a full-screen ad. It's essentially the only thing you can do on the bike without a subscription. You should also be able to sync up a heart-rate monitor for some additional stats, but I haven't personally tried that. There is no programmable resistance or duration; you have to adjust the resistance yourself using the knob.

Freestyle Ride is found in the "... more" menu in the app and is mixed in with app and account settings. It's actually very easy to miss and I feel like this is on purpose. The stock Echelon app/tablet on the bike is almost entirely tailored toward using the paid Echelon subscription service and without hacking the tablet, this is all it'll do.

Honestly, I would have been fine using just Freestyle mode if it wasn't for the giant full-screen ad you have to stare at with a tiny stats bar at the bottom. From what I understand, the freestyle screen used to be stats only but the last tablet update forced an ad on there. What concerns me is what happens if they decide to either remove freestyle completely, or somehow make it even worse than it is now in another update later down the road.

However, I wouldn't let that dissuade you from considering the bike because it's bluetooth capable and can be either paired with your phone/tablet, or the stock tablet can be hacked to remove the Echelon bloatware and re-installed with your own apps. The bike itself is solid and well built for the price, it's just the included tablet & software sort of cripples the experience out the box.

Thank you for the response I'm getting excited about it!

I think the 3rd party hardware they're talking about might be this project on GitHub: https://github.com/doudar/SmartSpin2k/ I don't have a 3D printer to build one but my BIL does so maybe that'll be our Christmas project...

Fair point. I just have no idea what the differences are and can't find any good comps online.

I don't know bikes really, so tech specs mean nothing to me..
Costco version has auto resistance for workouts or biking apps with hills. Heavier flywheel so much stronger resistance. 15 inch tablet vs 10. And includes 12 month subscription vs 1.

Walmart is a great beginner bike. If you're more experienced or will pay for classes for a year, it might be better to get the Costco one.

Personally I chose the Walmart version.

Anyone found free or purchaseable hardware to raise the handlebar height passed max or forward more or something? I'm 5'11" and the handlebar is a bit too far away when properly configured, so my back hurts a bit. I just want that thing forward like 3 inches or higher the same.

The handle is slightly wobbly regardless of I screw tight or not. Is this normal?

Not for me.. make sure you have put the handlebar bottom bracket (part 22) correctly as I missed it initially.. For me the seat I have to do a real tight as it was going backwards with sudden weight on it

Pulled the trigger, my work has a $150 fitness credit I have been trying to find a good use for before the year ends and this seems like a good option. I am also super familiar with adb and sideloading so jailbreaking this should be fairly easy for me. Thanks for the info everyone!

Received mine today after a shipping delay. Now I know why… the box is destroyed and the shipping label is placed upside-down from the clear instruction to have the box one way up. Not even going to bother as if I do need to return this, I'll never get it back in the box.

The wiggle comes from the straight bar going into the main body.

Thanks ever so much! I've been looking for a reasonably priced but solidly built exercise bike. I can't afford the $1400+ for a Peleton bike.
