How reliable is this drive?

Is there anyway to put this in a build, but only have it accessible as a backup, meaning the drive is not accessible (i.e. in case of machine being compromised by a virus or jack) unless you take some explicit action, but maybe not a matter of mounting or unmounting the drive

I used to use a Windows program that, via command line, would allow a drive to be mounted or dismounted. I used it to keep a drive hidden outside of backup. Through my backup process, I would mount the drive, validate the drive was mounted, perform backup activities, then unmount when done. This was perfect for me at the time, but this was many moons ago.

What type of build are you referencing -- a computer, NAS or something else?

I have this 18tb drive and it runs nice. I have it in my build from a about year ago, as my photo backup drive. It does make noise but that is expected and it's not that loud. When I'm in Lightroom, it makes noise with Lightroom excessing the drive but I'm used to it and does not bother me at all. It's also pretty fast too.

I highly recommend this drive for your needs!!

Every seagate and this includes even more enterprise seagates has always failed on me at exceptionally high rates. I have lost 8 out of 10 in the last 8 years. I have lost 1 HGST out of 10 during this same time. I have lost no WD Red Pro's. All of those drives have roughly 53k+ hours on them.

I will NEVER buy another seagate drive again. BTW Toshiba MG08 16 TB for $230 on amazon.
