If it looks and smells fine, is it still safe to eat after the expiration date?

I picked up 6 of these, been running them about a year for backups, pretty fast hard drive, great price and density. I got 65TB after Raid 6 and formatting for $1600, plus about $600 for a used Dell R530 server with a 1 yr warranty. I can add a couple more for $550 and get 100TB server for $2700 total. Usually a server that big costs $10-20K (refurb or new, with a 5 year warranty.)

You can get a Dell R550 like new condition Server with a warranty, add 8 of these and have a 100TB Enterprise server for about $6k.

Yes, its great for NAS. Its great for any kind of bulk storage from home systems to enterprise servers. Its not great if you need to do very fast processing of a ton of random things, an SSD is better for that. This is great for videos, images, office/work files, backups, archives, etc.

One thing to note is Backblazed tested 60 of these drives and 3 failed, or about 5% of them. A small test number, but still a somewhat high fail rate so far. 16TB version only failed about 1% of the time.

They are great for a NAS if it isn't located somewhere that noise is a concern. Enterprise drives are a good bit louder than most consumer drives when they are reading/writing data. In a proper case, I don't find them to be too loud, even sitting beside my computer desk.

Bad reviews on Newegg for failures, probably from drive handling. I've bought drives from Newegg before that were shipped with very insufficient packaging and bouncing around. I'd be worried about this, as well as the comment that these OEM drives are supposed to be backed by Newegg (vs Seagate) but that Newegg doesn't honor that. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can comment.

I bought this drive from Newegg 13 months ago for $250. I use it for my security camera storage and media playback.

No problems so far, but it is the loudest drive I own. It's always writing due to the cameras.

I've been fortunate with drives over my lifetime. I've lost a Western Digital about 15 years ago and a couple of Maxtors (dating myself) even further back.
