I'm thinking it may be because this is a recurring price drop. It'll be at $1699 for a while, then drop to $1099 for a week... repeat cycle.

That being said, I bought this system earlier this year and if you up it to 32GB ram and make some tweaks, which are easily found online, it is a beast of machine for a really affordable price.
To my knowledge it is actually reversed majority of issues was with the 5900 version as they had a lot of problems with QC due to the liquid metal, however the 5980HX version seems to have better QC:

I can tell you from my experience with this laptop that it easily pumps about 145W-165W to the GPU. It uses AMD SmartShift to vary the power budget between the CPU and GPU depending on demand. I can also tell you that the full power budget (CPU + GPU) is 190W. It has a big power brick to support this at 280W. No lack for power here.

The only issue is the lack of the MUX switch. This causes the GPU to underperform when gaming on the laptop screen. You have to connect it to an external monitor via the USB C port to get the full performance.

It's pretty much replace the 1xr16 ram with 1xr8 ram and replace Mediatek network card with an Intel one, but I'm not a tinkerer and it's too much work for me, I hate opening up laptops, also last gen processor and ram

Someone mentioned the 5980HX has some known issues that a 5900 version does not. Can anyone shed some light on that?

Terrific machine, upgraded ram and did not need wifi card. Do not use wifi drivers on driver page but ones under drivers section of asus/ mediatek and i have experienfed 0 probs with wifi. If you are a gamer there is not a better one at this price point (especially if you use external screen, make sure to get USB c cable though to use and GPU direct)
If you use arch I have not encountered sleep problems using Wayland but USB c external is not working but I suspect this to be a driver issue

Is the performance terrible with the built in screen? I am on the go all day and can't lug a monitor around.

No, the difference is only in CPU performance, so it's only noticeable at lower resolutions and higher frame rates (10-15% performance difference worst case scenario, around 1600x900)

Also, the 1440p screen is as good as you can get that isn't OLED. Excellent for picture/video editing as well as gaming.

what tweaks? I bought it, added a second drive, and upped the RAM, but I didn't realize people were changing other things.
