Vivobook is Asus' budget to mainstream/mid-range brand. So expect cutbacks like the cheaper soldered ram, USB 2.0 ports, plastic base build etc.
If you want premium/upper mid-range and higher then you'll have to pay more with their zenbook brand.
Like other manufacturers, Asus' entry into the budget 'creators' segment uses their budget brand and swap in a 'creators' display panel and/or gpu.

The flicker is not something you can see easily. It is very subtle and leads to eye fatigue over time. If you want to confirm if PWM is being used to dim the screen, take a slow motion video (240 or higher FPS) and then watch the video. You will see flickering on it if PWM dimming is being used. Also, remember that there will be no PWM flicker at maximum brightness, and the flicker will be much less noticeable at higher brightness levels.

I've never seen an OLED for this price. 1800p and 400 Nits is also very rare at this price point. All three together is unheard of.

Too bad about the ram situation. Kinda makes it a no go for anyone wanting to capitalize on that OLED screen by using it for creative work.

Great screen.
Everything else is shit.
All the vivoshmooks at wally and sams feel like garbage. Zenbooks are nice but each model comes with a sacrifice. Sad

Since 2021, they all have switched to the less expensive pwm led controller, which operates at a higher switching frequency. There is no reason for them to continue using the inferior, more expensive chip.

I have the newer 12th gen Intel i5 version of this. I do not notice any issues with the screen. I guess you could say colors might not looks great at 10% brightness but I often have it at 25%-50% and I have no issues at all. My wife has same laptop, both bought from best buy during that $500 sale. Both are great laptops. 8gb ram sucks but I didn't buy to game on it or heavy photo edits. It's just a nice laptop to use.

Np. OLED is great when it comes to contrast and colors, but in addition to PWM flickering, another thing that is not great on most larger OLED panels (laptops and larger) is text. Due to the sub pixel arrangement, text is never as sharp as a RGB LCD panel. On most flagship phones this isn't a problem due to the extremely high pixel densities, but you can really tell the difference on Laptop sized panels.

Please recommend a laptop for people who use text editors and read using a laptop for hours at a time. I'd appreciate a good suggestion under $600

Interesting PWM came up in the discussion. It isn't a hard and fast rule to avoid. PWM operates on a certain frequency depending on the panel. It could go as low as 50Hz all the way up to 10000Hz. And normally the higher the frequency go the less impact it will have on people. Like many complicated medical related things, this depends on the person. Some people are not sensitive at all, even if PWM operates at a very low frequency. Other people are very sensitive even at higher frequencies. So it really depends on the person.

OLED has certain nice properties, very low black level is one of them (in case you're working in a complete dark room). PWM is a draw back. So really there are trades off to be had.

AFAIK there isn't a single best display technology yet. Every one of them has some kind of trade off (besides the price)
