Hmm, hate to burst your bubble, but the other cheaper set is more practical and by that I mean works better. The knife in the nicer set has a paracord handle. The more you use that knife the more the narrow steel spine digs into your hand. Knives with a regular handle the pressure is more evenly spread on you hand less hot spots. The paracord wrap feels like sandpaper after a bit, picks up dirt and grime like crazy and is hard to clean that grime off. The hatchet has the same problem with the paracord handle. On top of that, the thin blade does not wedge wood apart enough and has a tendency of sticking in the wood tight and you have to wiggle it to get it out. The thickness of regular hatchets makes them split the wood instead of get stuck in it. The saw back on that machete does not work very well, catches a lot and does not cut well, wire saw works faster and isn't as clumsy to use, also does not catch nearly as much.
The cheaper set has a more traditional design features to it, more practical and proven. The other set has more of the trendy design features to it that the manufacturer thinks catches the public's eye more. But certainly does not work as efficiently.
I have this set, all of it works just fine. If I guessed that the hatchet and knives came from the same factory that makes fiskars and gerber I probably wouldn't be wrong. Hatchet and the two knives works fine, no issues, same with the paracord and the wire saw. I haven't really tested or used the lenstatic compass or the carabiners. If you want bragging rights look elsewhere , but if you want to split kindling, cut things or tie things together, this set works just fine. Nothing "hot garbage" about any of it at all, works just fine.
Seriously? Why wouldn't you want a bread knife in the handle of your hatchet?

If you are ever in an emergency situation where you need this kind of stuff you are likely going to find yourself wishing you had spent more than $15 getting the cheapest crap available.

Eh ? what else can a hatchet do other than make a fire and set up camp ? It splits wood into kindling. That is what I use it for and it does it very well. I don't have fantasies of being rambo and having to bring down an MI 28 attack helicopter with my trusty uber expensive hatchet. Even if I'm in a survival situation stuck out in the wilderness, the hatchet still does the same thing.... split wood and make a campfire and maybe a shelter.

Hey, do an experiment for your own benefit, go buy an uber expensive hatchet and go into the wilderness. I bet you'll use it for the same things, make a fire and set up camp. I'll bet you can do exactly the same thing with a $15 walmart hatchet.

We get it. It works as a hatchet. But to act like the crappy cheap Walmart hatchet is going to be anywhere close to as good as nicer ones out there is absurd. C'mon.

Are you basing your opinion on performance or just the price? I have a fiskars hatchet and an ozarks hatchet, their construction and performance are really similar. Both have forged heads, teflon coated then injection molded into fiber reinforced plastic handles. I wouldn't be surprised if the fiskars and ozark hatchets are made by the same factory.
Here is the thing.... splitting wood into kindling isn't demanding at all. Much like having two cars compete, one is a ferrari that can do 180mph, the other is a kia sorento that can do 110mph. The challenge is who can go down the highway the best at 55mph. Splitting wood is splitting wood, it just isn't too demanding. I've used both a fiskars and an ozark hatchet and if I ignore the brands... they split wood the same.

Thats in case the hatchet didn't scare them enough. You pull out a butter knife and that'll do the job.

None of this crap is good. It's for the dad who wants to camp a weekend or two with his kid. It does the job to make a fire and setup camp, that's all.
I split wood with my 9mm, no need for a hatchet.

Are you kidding? Splitting wood is splitting wood?

I'm no snob. I went to harbor freight last night. I like cheap tools. I have a harbor freight machete. I'm not gonna be up here acting like it's as good as a top brand. "Well hacking weeds is hacking weeds"

I think you're being disingenuous because you must win your point.

It's cheap junk. Will it function as an axe, yes! But why are you dying on this hill with this nonsense that it's pretty much just as good as more expensive axes

I just say it how it is based on what I see when I use the tools. I'm pretty brand blind. I have, in power tools, corded and cordless, Bosch, DeWalt, Craftsman, Ryobi, Makita, Metabo hpt, Kobalt, greenworks, sunjoe, and plenty of no name brands.
I'm not "dying on this hill" but I will call out BS when I see it. When a tool performs badly, I acknowledge it and take note, but when a tool performs average or well I take note of that too. Plenty of people said Japanese products were junk, now they are known for quality. Same for Taiwan, Korea. Well, people like you might not want to accept it..... but products from china, store brands like ozark have been improving a lot over the years and are now solidly average in performance and some actually top notch. (DJI) There are ozark branded products that are junky, and I say they are (paracord handled knives and hatchets with stamped steel heads). But when solid ozark branded products come out, like the forged head hatchets, I will say so and acknowledge it. Your just all bent that someone (me) isn't agreeing with your view of things. Hey, go out and buy a fiskars hatchet and ozark forged head hatchet and split some wood. You'll see for yourself what reality is instead of just going by assumptions based on what you think instead of what actually is.

at this price point, how is that even a question??
of course it is. But if you were up a creek, this would be better than nothing.
What do you expect for the price, a hand forged Japanese katana??
