Why does the downloadable version and disc version suck compared to the online… the UI for the on sale versions are terrible

This may not be the lowest price before April 15 but it's darn close and I'm pulling the trigger on Premium so I can get started on my returns . It probably will be $10 cheaper at some point but it's not worth $10 to me to wait for that lower price. Typically tax software (and antivirus) goes on sale between Christmas and New Year's Day but that didn't happen this year so this deal is good enough to pull the trigger.
Yup, bought in Dec 2021 for $22 and thought got a good deal and will start taxes early (for a change). Man, was I wrong! Went on sale multiple times for $18 and as you said for $15. And guess what, couldn't finish my taxes until the last week anyways (me being lazy for that). 😞

Question is buy it now or wait until Feb/Mar for even better deal? Don't know 😕 already missed out on RedPocket annual plan deal that I passed on during black friday but never came during Christmas. So now I'm feeling FOMO.

That's a lot of pain and suffering over a few dollars.

Believe you meant 1099-NEC.

I know for the online versions Deluxe accommodates independent contractors with no expenses to deduct, while Premium is for independent contractors with expenses to deduct. I would assume the same applies for the downloaded versions, but have not confirmed.
Yes, 1099-NEC….thank you
Ended up getting Premium just in case. Although I will have no expenses. Only $10 more to be sure.

IIRC, the State portion of the package is to get the tax prep module, not the e-File.
Yes. New York State residents who intend to use H&R Block (not always worth it) need Deluxe+State.

It's a terrible affliction that I suffer from too. But oh, the joy from knowing you timed it just right!

I also switched from TurboTax to H&R a few years ago. I found H&R much easier as well as cheaper, but my returns are simple. I really should be using a free option at this point.

Sometimes I wonder that myself too. But that's the side effect of slickdealing unfortunately 🙄

Most cannot file until end of Feb due to lack of various forms pending from different firms. So why buy so early? HODL

Does anyone know if you can download both the PC and Mac version or only one? Previously the CDs had both versions so you could install on both.
You'll be sent an e-mail to download either or...or both (.dmg for Mac or .exe for Windows).

Thanks for adding your review and limitations of those who used TurboTax in prior years and trying to import prior year taxes.

Q: You stated you used both software for your tax return and were not happy with H&R Block, which is understandable as each software is different - the question I have - was there any difference in the final tax due or tax refund between the two software packages? If so, who far off was one over the other? Did you find out why there was a difference, if any?

TIA
Having used both, H&R Block is much easier to use, particularly the interview. If you like and use the interview method, H&R Block is the clear winner.

Regarding accuracy, for simpler returns either is probably fine. TT has known issues with form 1116 and does not complete it correctly, while Block does. For more complex returns, rentals, limited partnerships, and foreign taxes, Block is much better. In addition, Block has free audit support. TT is now owned by Intuit, so that is another reason to prefer Block to avoid Intuit's predatory practices.

Quote from ShrewdPocket3689...Basically, it thought that the two retirement accounts had a combined contribution limit, not separate.
That actually sounds correct, there is a federal combined limit for contributions.

There's usually a chart in the listing and on the back of the box (if there's an image) that gives you a good idea. Basically, if you have rental properties, you need Premium. If you have a business or need to do an estate tax filing, you need Premium & Business.
The chart is misleading, it implies that you have to have Premium for rental properties, while the actual difference is that the Premium offers supporting videos for rentals, but the forms and filing process are in Deluxe as well.

What OS version also works on a Chromebook?
Neither ... unless you have linux installed on your Chromebook and then have a windows emulator installed within it... even then it may not work p

In 2003 I had been a TurboTax user for several years and it became known that that version of TT wrote to the boot sector of the hard disk for DRM, but TT didn't say anything about it and it actually rendered some computers unbootable after installation, not to mention they had no business at all in my boot sector. It was shady. I switched to Tax Cut and never looked back. Granted, 20 years is a long time to hold a grudge but Tax Cut hasn't given me a reason to reconsider, it works fine.

Prior to 2019 TT hid their free filing webpage from search engine results and steered eligible filers to their paid software, so honestly, they keep giving me reasons not to give them a second chance.
