Deal Details
Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.
  • Refer to the forum thread for additional deal discussion.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

It's actually extreme easy if you're already paying taxes. We did it back the day when my wife got her m3 and it was just one additional form. Got a nice fat check for a refund so we effectively didn't pay taxes on the car.

Amazing follow-up post from you.
We come across so many situations in life similar to what you are facing within 2 weeks of one of your biggest purchases. And most people will get sad, depressed and angry in those situations. You are in great frame of mind and your statement is so true.

If one was happy when a certain event happened there is no reason to let go of that happiness if in follow-up something changes.
I appreciate the response. Don't get me wrong - it still hurts that I missed out on ~$12,000 of savings in the span of two weeks! But I am glad that these cars are discounted so more people can purchase them. I have been very happy with my Tesla Model Y thus far (let me know if anyone wants to know my experiences or have questions), so I don't regret the purchase itself.

Take care!

The income requirement for tax credit is pretty low. People who qualify for tax credit really have no business owning a 60K car. I was driving a used Honda Accord back when my income was that low. No wonder Americans are so hooked on credit. If you have a car loan, you are spending too much on your car.
This is the correct answer for those that think the car costs 'too much'. I've written a check for every one of my cars and won't buy until I've saved up. My wife has drank the kool aid and thinks having regular income and regular bills is the 'right' way to do things. Guess who has the net worth?

Paying cash isn't always the best way to buy a car if you can get a better return elsewhere.

More interested in solar panels for the roof discount. I'll never trade my gas car for electric.
I'd consider solar over the patio / backyard.

Reason is once you've got solar over the roof, it's a pita to rip all the panels out to fix roof damage, patch, or redo.

Solar overhead on the patio / backyard not only separates the two, but can easily be motor driven to follow the sun, too. (If you're into maximizing the amount of energy captured.)

Don't forget to factor in the 20k - 30k complete battery pack change out in a few years down the road.

If you live in places with cold winter (like I do), I would say these batteries wouldn't even last 5 years, let alone 10 years.

If you live in California, do you think the grid infrastructure can keep up with everybody plugging in their EVs ? People there barely have power on during peak hours (fark PG&E BTW).

Hard pass !

The future of car is hybrid vehicle & plug-in hybrid, not pure ICE cars & definitely not 100% EV cars.
Dude, go troll somewhere else. There's plenty of proof that Tesla battery packs last around 1,500 charge cycles, which will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 300-500k miles, including cold climates. Get out of here with your nonsense.

I would have to pay tax on the $7,500 tax credit portion because it isn't a point-of-sale discount. Also, sales taxes and fees vary geographically, so I didn't want to do a breakdown of this information, as it may confuse people and may not be directly helpful to them.

Here is a screenshot of my order's Price Details, if anyone is interested. I want to help others make informed decisions by providing - hopefully - unbiased and factual information.

I hope this helps,
Tofu Vic

What's the referral credit ? how can I get one ?

Does that means if e.g. my w-2 witholding is too high and I don't owe any additional payment due tax time (but income cap and tax liability met), I still wouldn't get it?

Your W2 and withholding is totally irrelevant.

Line 24 on your 1040. The $7500 credit offsets that number 1:1 up to $7500.

Man you say a lot of easily proven false stuff.

Why is that?

When it says $7500 back if you have at least $7500 "tax due", does that take into account what you have withheld on your W2? For example, if have $8000 in fed income taxes, but have withheld $7000 from paychecks during the year, so really only $1000 still due the IRS, do they use the original $8000 due to see if you qualify for $7500 back, or the $1000 still due?
on your 2021 1040 return, look at page 2 line 24, that is the tax you are supposed to owe, regardless of what your withholding is

is it higher than 7500? if so, and if your taxes don't change much year to year, then you will get the entire 7500 assuming your income is within the limits of the rules for that credit and they deliver before the end of march 2023

Did I say that orange man was bad? I don't care who runs the country (doesn't seem to matter), but the virtue signaling green beans that are buying these do care. Or is the discount just for fun?

I bought a Nissan Leaf in 2022 after they changed the tax rules and all the cars (except Leaf and Mustang) would not qualify. I am very happy with my Leaf purchase and its great for driving in the city. The range is good enough for that.

I am sure that your Tesla is even more awesome. Congratulations and enjoy the vehicle.
