If you don't keep some way to heat food via a small butane, propane, or even wood/paper/etc., then you really have little business worrying about these emergency foods as you haven't really done much at all to prepare and seem to be just trying to buy your way out of a problem.

Personally I just keep my normal stocks of canned and dry goods full and rotated fresh keeping them organized and ready rather than some expensive specialty light weight food that I will likely never use other than camping which I just buy as needed.

Well, if you are in for a few, then this other one is probably a little better deal, imo... as it has about 1.5 more pounds of food, plus two more additional kinds of food in the buckets (vegetable chicken soup & banana chips) and the price per "ounce" ends up being a little less.

Not crapping on the deal, but very often the kits in a mylar bag or a bucket say "up to" 25 year life but the internal packages are rated between 5 and 25 years. Freeze dried food is better to buy individually in number 10 cans where the exact "best by" date is listed.

That being said, I think all of these freeze dried foods last way longer than their "best by" dates. They just might not taste as good. For real emergency food, taste is less critical and anything rated at 25 years is probably good forever if stored in a good location.

The only ones you might have to be concerned with are items with oils like bananas (usually rated only 10 years), or maybe something with creams.

You make a good argument, no harm in having a few of these around. I canceled the other and ordered this instead. Thanks!

so, you need to "add water and simmer" - ummm... for those who've been through a few emergencies (hurricanes, winter storms, etc.), power is not always available... would be nice if they were self-heating!

Get a butane or propane stove, or build a little alcohol stove out of cans. If you're in an area that could have an emergency, why not prepare yourself if you know there's a chance for the electricity to go out?

I grabbed 2 if these when I saw them, they seemed like the best price per calorie for any that I looked at under $150.

Unfortunately that deal is no longer available.

Those who have been through a few emergencies should know by now to have a way to filter/heat water without the aid of electricity.

At least with the backpacking freeze dried meals, you can get by with just adding room temp water and waiting an hour+.

Some people do that to avoid taking the weight of a stove and fuel.

And many people have gas stoves in their kitchens that will work when the power goes out as long as you have a match to ignite it.
