What about money? Is money not a valid reason in your book? If so, can you lend me the extra $2500 to get an 83" OLED? I'll take itunes gift cards in lieu of cash. I won't complain about it actually being a couple inches smaller.
When deciding between this TV and the 86" LG deals, one of the biggest differences is panel type. The LG's use an IPS panel which provides a better viewing angle, but at the cost of contrast ratio. Samsung 85" Crystal models typically use a VA panel which has the opposite characteristics. I suspect the TU690T to be no different.
That's like saying "there's no reason to get a car that's not a Ferrari or Bentley unless you're only looking for a way to get around town and don't care about how you look". That makes sense right?? Not every consumer has an extra $4-5K for an 85" TV and will be completely satisfied with this model because it is within their budget.

My theory... You either go with the black Friday or the absolutely cheapest model in your desired size you can find or go all in with an OLED.
It really doesn't seem to make sense to go in the middle. With a middle models... You are getting small incremental improvements but still making huge compromises while paying a LOT of money (2x-5x or $500-1500) more than the $300 bottom model.
We find our spot of value to performance on that line I guess. That line is not linear though. The quality goes up slowly as prices climbs higher until you hit OLED where performance goes way up for not much more money. Opposite of the way most things are priced.
That being said, I bought a middle of the road. Clearance, one offs, and end of year deals can throw a wrench in my theory Smilie

Yes, like a car…say 2022 Honda Accord or Toyota Camry;

Base trim vs top trim in economy midsize sedan segment.

$25k vs $40k. Mid trim is 33k but with compromise.

I know what I want hence Sony 55'' A80J!

The fact is that over 90% of people are perfectly happy with TV's that get "yellow" numbers on rtings.com. Even a red number or two is acceptable. For every 100 TV's I sell, I sell 3 or 4 QLED's and zero OLED's. A few people talk a big game, but no one has ever plunked down the cash. I sell twice as many TCL Hisense & Vizios as I do Sony, Samsung & LG. I've talked to a couple of kids loading TV's into cars at Best Buy, their numbers were less dramatic, but vaguely similar. Its just so easy to get stuck down a rabbit hole looking at mfr. specs and rtings numbers. I know I do it myself sometimes. But essentially it's mostly excruciating minutiae.

This guy must sell TVs out of a big white van. Can't take anything he says seriously after claiming he has NEVER sold an OLED (c'mon, never?) and to top it off sells twice as many blah blah blah as blah blah Samsung's. Samsung sells the most TVs, by far. All those 90% of people he claims don't care about picture quality? Samsung buyers, all of them lol. They buy on brand name and price. And they are buying this tv. It's huge, cheap, has ok PQ, and most importantly says Samsung on it...

There's only a few $100 difference, not $10's of $1000's.

You're going to get a ridiculous 85" TV, why not go down to a 75" with a much better screen that will be relivant for many more years?

Yup already covered it. See the comments about the panel types.
Saw them, but IPS vs VA isn't always everything. My Q85 Samsung is IPS but it blows away almost anything I've ever seen. Real world comparison might help some folks trying to make a decision between the two, hence my comment.

Have edge lit TVs come a long way in the past 10+ years? Genuine question. Curious to see how it would fare on a TV this big

Yes. Never. And I was stupid to think I could. Where I live, over half of the population is low income, i.e. 140% of the poverty line. Brick and mortar caught Covid and died before anyone else. I'm the next best thing. I know this is a departure from the rest of America, but so is this website. The cross section of the population that encompasses millennials living in their parent's basement is vastly over-represented here. And while I don't have any problem with that per se, it is very boring hearing from people who want to declare my life experiences as fake simply because they don't have enough life experience to imagine any reality other than their own.

Are you talking about Samsung QN85's? I'm not familiar with Q85. Most QN85's are ADS, which is similar to IPS. But since it costs more than twice as much, I fail to see any relevancy to the two entry-level models discussed here. Are you making a point, or just noise?

In that case I would save $300 and get the much better TCL 5 series 75 inch.

Yeah me too, but it's not about me. (Any chance I can lure you out of that hole with these nice carrots?) This thread is for those who have been waiting for a deal on an 85/86" because they already have a 75 and bigger is better. It is after all late January. The Super Bowl is mere weeks away. Their #2 criteria is brand. Their fear is dropping a grand on a brand that not only they are unfamiliar with, but the Joneses as well. You ain't gonna change their mind. Honestly, I think the best we can hope to do for them, is to ask them to consider the IPS vs. VA tradeoff for their particular install.

Alright. I have decided to leave this thread and look into the A80J TV from Sony thread.

I learned that I'm somebody who wants the best 55" TV at or under $1k so there's that. Don't follow me folks.

Too bad large dumb TV no longer exist. It was much simpler back then…with much dated specs I believe. Plasma TV anyone?
Okay thanks. We were starting to get worried. Thrifty Pickle had already started to organize a search party.
