What about money? Is money not a valid reason in your book? If so, can you lend me the extra $2500 to get an 83" OLED? I'll take itunes gift cards in lieu of cash. I won't complain about it actually being a couple inches smaller.

When deciding between this TV and the 86" LG deals, one of the biggest differences is panel type. The LG's use an IPS panel which provides a better viewing angle, but at the cost of contrast ratio. Samsung 85" Crystal models typically use a VA panel which has the opposite characteristics. I suspect the TU690T to be no different.

That's like saying "there's no reason to get a car that's not a Ferrari or Bentley unless you're only looking for a way to get around town and don't care about how you look". That makes sense right?? Not every consumer has an extra $4-5K for an 85" TV and will be completely satisfied with this model because it is within their budget.

Yeah maybe that's another plus for the LG then. They put the alpha7 in their base 86's, which is native 120.

Maybe you've found the gaping hole in your theory.

The cost to performance curve is geometric. It's not that much different than sports cars. Every 10 HP costs more than the previous 10, especially when longevity is taken into consideration. The additional cost, expressed in dollars per rtings point per year of life, in going from LED to QLED is way less than going from anything to OLED, especially when burn-in is considered. Additionally, the higher the rtings numbers, the harder it becomes to notice the difference in a non laboratory settings.
It's the opposite, the difference I see when comparing 75 and larger tvs is there is not much difference in low cost up to middle upper priced ones as you work up, small changes in overall visual quality but there are huge differences in price across that same range, like $400 up to $1700 or so. It's not until you get to oled there is a real obvious difference and they are not much more cost relative to upper non oled. I'm not an OLED fanbio, I don't have an OLED. Just an observation I made looking at tons of TVs in the last 2 months. Actually looking, not looking at specs. Most things have an exponential cost increase for slight improvements at the top end of the scale Think video cards, cpu, sports cars etc... Common for 1.5-2x the price for slightly better. The current TV market is the opposite in my opinion.

Yes probably every single person that has ever bought a laser TV. All 137 of them.

You can go from 6.7 to 7.8 (11 pts.) going from a TCL 55S446 to 55S546 for about $100 or so. Take the 55" oled of your choice, subtract 11 points from its score and find a TV with that score. The difference in price between that TV and your OLED is going to be much more than $100.

I'm guessing that you're actually getting lost in the quagmire that is Samsung's bloated and overpriced QLED lineup. If you want to do comparisons there, you'll need a longevity factor. Consider multiplying the OLED price by 1.5 if you think it will only have 2/3 the performance life of the QLED. There is currently a significant disparity between manufacturer's claims and consumer experience. Samsung knows that and uses it to their best advantage.

Loved my 85in Hisense but after exactly 2 years it died
Our 65-in Hisense developed a line about 15 months in... Reviews were excellent, overall we're happy with it and mostly don't notice the line, but I struggle to purchase another one from the same manufacturer

That depends if it's being promoted on SD or not. If so, you'll find all kinds of (10) rep members magically appearing saying buy, buy, buy this projection tv.

It says 120hz, but honestly there's no reason to get a big TV that's not QLED or OLED in 2023 unless you're only looking for a big screen and don't care about picture quality.
Isn't burn-in still a thing, and brightness?

Serious question.

LG OLEDs have OLED care panel refresh and pixel refresh which will prevent or fix burn-in. Lots of people use them for computer monitors or games these days which have lots of static icons etc

People seem to be scared of burn-in, but nobody seems to have ever actually seen it happen outside of store display TVs that are on 24/7.

OLED does work best in darker rooms. QLED would be better for a very bright room.

So I've heard. Trying to gather consensus (such as it is) from this forum. Thanks.

I've actually seen it. It's real. I'm not referring to image retention. Thanks for the reply.

I don't think every consumer needs to be looking at the very best and most expensive TV, but there is a factor when looking at TV's in this size that many people overlook. Most people don't have the seating distance to mask the imperfections. So whereas you may be perfectly happy not getting the best tech for a 55 or 65" TV, you may well find that you DO see the imperfections on an 85" TV simply by nature of not having enough distance from your seating.

I say this from experience, I have close family members that bought a budget model of an 80+ inch TV and while they are not generally sensitive to lower end tech they very much did notice that the picture on their brand new TV was not nearly as crisp as it seemed on their previous model, which was 30" smaller. And while $1k is not nearly as expensive as the high end models, it's still A LOT of money for folks to spend on a brand new TV and come away disappointed.

Not everyone will experience this, but just thought I would mention it. Don't turn an entire wall into a low-end TV, sit 10 feet from it, and expect to be wowed. It's probably better to get a smaller TV with better tech.
