Adequate. About 50% of peak performance of the top of the line SSDs, but still plenty quick.

No cache, so large writes (like an OS/application install) will potentially be impacted.

I'd recommend the P3 over the P3 Plus. Same controller. Same QLC flash. Only difference is you are limited to PCIe 3.0 speeds which isn't a huge deal practically. (It's only a hair slower on Tom's benchmarks.) It runs cooler and more efficiently, too. It's a very good option for use in a laptop.

$60 from Crucial direct.

If you don't mind going with one of the Taiwanese based brands, the UD90 ($69, same controller with Micron TLC) and MP34 ($57, hodgepodge of controllers and TLC types, but all pretty good with DRAM at PCIe 4.0) are better TLC based options.

It'll work, but maybe consider the Crucial P5 Plus 1TB drive instead? The P5 Plus is TLC vice QLC in the P3 Plus. It's a little better performance, the drive handles better when it gets full than the P3 plus, and the difference in cost is $14.

No issues with Sony recommending 5,500 on speed? Recommendations on a cheap heatsink?

I don't believe that's an issue now, although it's possible this could change in the future.

As for a heatsink, I got this one and it's worked well. I've seen others here recommend it as well.

Yes, but you would need the proper adapter. Apple uses a proprietary connector. You can find more info about this via some quick Googling. If you don't want to use an adapter, OWC offers SSDs that do not need those adapters.
