I got one of these for $125 last month and hesitant to use it for my OS drive. I saw all the Crucial P5 and P3 drives were pretty highly rated, but the plus versions are the QLC. I didn't catch that before buying it.

Why do you say that DRAM primarily benefits long sustained writes? I have read multiple articles saying the opposite, that the speed benefit is greater for short random access rather than long sustained access. This seems more logical. For example:

Here are the facts. QLC native speed is very slow, 100MB/sec which is slower than spiining hard drives which are 200 MB/sec. So to speed it up, it uses either DRAM or psedocache (using the QLC in a special faster mode as cache.) To make it cheaper, most QLC dont have DRAM and use pseudocache, like the P3 and P3 plus. So when the pseudocache is used up, either by transferring a lot of data or filling up the drive so less and less is available for the pseudocache, it reverts to 100MB/sec. You definitely dont want to use this as a OS drive or one where you expect to transfer lots of data to it. As a mainly read drive, like storing music or movies where you write once and read more often, its worth considering.

I promised myself I would bite at $100... I have a 500mb SSD and a 2tb mechanical drive carried over from an older PC. I am wanting to replace the 2tb before it fails, and its getting so close!

not sure why people complain about the same old things that will realistically not occur to them.

440tbw - if you want to keep the drive for 10 years, you'll have to write (not read, write) 44tb per year (that's writing/deleting the whole drive 22 times a year) for 10 years straight. vast majority of you aren't gonna do that. if you are, you're obviously doing some professional workload where you shouldn't be cheaping out on the drive itself.

DRAM-less - most modern DRAM-less nvme drives leverage HMB (host memory buffer) which borrows system memory in lieu of having DRAM on the drive itself. so you will not lose the functionality of DRAM, and it does not use a significant amount of resources.

DRAM-less drives aren't necessarily just going to croak much faster. most drives have wear-leveling technology to improve longevity.

QLC - it has a better capacity/cost ratio compared to TLC at the expense of performance & longevity. so if you're ok with the performance numbers and TBW, then this is sorta moot.

then there's those talking about the precipitous performance drop after sustained writes - you have to sequentially write half a terabyte at once for the performance to drop. how often are you sequentially writing more than half a TB at once? not only that, the drive will recover most of its cache after a very short period of time (we're talking seconds to minutes). yes the cache will decrease as the drive fills up, but it's still not going to affect the vast majority. if it fills up a reasonable amount, get a second drive.

if your workload requires you to have a better drive where you realistically need something better (professional workloads), then you shouldn't be shopping at the bargain bin. QLC is designed for consumer use, and for consumer use it's perfectly adequate.

stop spreading FUD about specs on a piece of paper that won't apply to the vast majority. if you can find a pcie gen 4.0 2tb TLC drive with DRAM from a reputable brand with high TBW at this price, please feel free to share.

I have this exact drive with a cooler. It's not heat related. Whenever I transfer files greater than a few gigs the file transfer speed drops to ~90 MBps or so.

I agree with all points except sustained writes. I have this exact drive and speeds plummet when copying files only a few gigs in size. Yes, I've enabled momentum cache too, same issue. I bought this thinking 500 gb of cache was plenty, but I'm baffled. If it's simply operator error on my part, I'm all ears.

If you can't budget in a non-QLC drive for one that has DRAM this is a good price. But for an OS drive, if you can splurge for another $30-40, a TLC drive would be more satisfactory at this capacity. Some good markdowns out lately if you need to do a build now or want to upgrade a PS5 M.2 Nvme.

What about the 1tb version of this
I' that a good choice for a boot drive
I am building with 12700k Asus tuf z690 MC BF bundle deal and a 3080ti
I kinda want to keep my boot drive clean, OS only.
I have $10 in BB rewards that expire the 26th
I just got RAM ,I still need a case and power supply and cooler or AIO
And I live very close to a MC.
What would you get out of those from BB to use up the reward cert and what is better to get at MC
I will also use submit a build coupons at MC for the remaining parts.
I am thinking the SSD is the best bet

If I use a DRAM-less nvme to store Steam games, is that a good idea? Is there a point when the pseudo-cache is no longer effective/useable, like if the 50-60% of the drive is full?
