I always read that for constant writes from security cams, you want the purples.

Like trandav stated, you want the purples for constant writes. if its just for clips, you can get away with the a red.

You definitely want the Purple drive by WD. I've had one running 24/7 for about 4 years and no issues.

You must use WD purple for surveillance. I have been using it for several years and no issue.

I don't mean to be rude, but purples have only existed for a few years.. surveillance has existed for a long time.. there is no way that purples are the one and only choice.

Colors sound like something from the marketing dept.

This is such a silly post I'm replying. No one said only the purple can be used for it. They're saying that it's clearly a better choice, the only one that makes sense in their opinion.

If someone says a car is a far better choice to cross the country than a horse, it doesn't mean no one did it on a horse before cars.

Of COURSE they're marketing names, and they're names for REAL drive differences.

And your point? Are you recommending people to use WD red for surveillance? Purple drives or equivalent have high endurance and designed to write constantly 24/7. you tried to challenge people when you dont know enough and you were being rude to begin with.

Currently have an 18TB purple, looking to add a couple more.

For reference I checked their spec sheets, Reds are rated for 300TB / yr, Purple 550 TB / yr.

I'll stick with Purple or Skyhawks.

WD has the same drive on sale on their website for $300. Paypal has a 12% cashback offer for WD right now which makes buying direct cheaper if you buy via Paypal's link.

It's not contradictory or anything. Yes surveillance cameras have existed way before and they (WD) created a suitable hard drive for them and they assigned the color PURPLE.
