if you build your own, you can install it. May need to change some settings for that drive to be seen. You can also get an external cradle for the drive if you don't want to get a NAS box.

It's a standard internal drive, it will work with any computer. It's just more robust, designed to support the regular utilization of a NAS rather than the occasional utilization of a desktop class drive.

Probably not until late this year or early next year. They’re just too new to get discounted.

Synology if you want something solid that you won't have to worry about. DIY if you want flexibility and more power.

You already are registered with WD so when warranty issues arise, they have your drive already in the system... Can be good or bad.

Until mid-May they had a special of 1 extra year of warranty, but that seems to be expired.

Yeah go with Amazon, not NewEgg. Lesser of two evils.
Newegg used to be great back in the day, but their customer service has gone downhill since.
Unfulfilled rebates, damaged products upon arrival, short return window, etc.

Now showing $399.99 for the 18TB on Amazon. Also, the listing (I think mistakenly?) says 256mb cache there, but it looks like the 18TB may only come in a 512mb cache option.

tl;dr They resold a $500 mobo that they knew was damaged as open box and at first denied person a refund until after the story went viral.

They have been Taiwan/Chinese majority owned since 2016 and it's going downhill with the above as an example.
