The overall experience is easy to use and automatically keep upgraded. Not just when it is dictated to you; that you have to pay, AGAIN. Everyone should see this by now. Close source enslaves your computer choices. Where we go from here depends on what hardware you buy. Expose this need while you still can.

Ha ha. So then explain how your costs at Wendy's would not be more if they used Microsoft licenses corporately and/or in stores.

That's what I thought.

How about the taxes you pay. All gov parts and schools paying for that discounted software. Well tax payers are paying that bill. What's worse is only being taught Windows "Because it has all the apps and is not as technical", LOL.

This motherboard is a great place to start, to avoid bad firmware. And who ever is building is either buying closed firmware that will eventually bite them or they are not. I figured you knew devices are being selected already.

And this is the starting point it all takes place for years to come. To the extent you have and do buy well, will give you your choice. As do I. See https://Linuxmint.com free guide.

I have this same CPU and upgraded from an i7 6700k. It's certainly more powerful in everyday computing and gaming. It's also more power efficient but that's because it's also a newer design. For something more objective, here's a comparison [userbenchmark.com].

That's a very beefy jump and would be very worthwhile. Frankly with this upgrade and the 6700xt, outside of a spicy monitor upgrade your son is good for another generation. The important thing to avoid the hidden cost is making sure the BIOS of the motherboard is up to date to support the 5xxx series CPU and your son didn't draw the very rare short straw on an AM4 motherboard that doesn't support it. I don't know if 2700x is selling like hotcakes on 2nd hand market, but would be a very nice 8c16t to repurpose for homelab if there's additional parts around.
