I am laughing at you and how ridiculously out of touch you are.
And while some people may have $100K in a retirement account, it may very well be in a 401K with an employer. Those are not movable to Merrill unless they leave a job.
This is not actually true.
Rolling your 401k money to an IRA is entirely dependent on the rules of your 401k.
Some, but not all (a distinction you seem to have a lot of trouble understanding exists) allow in-service rollovers in various circumstances.
Additionally- many people have 401ks where some of the $ got there from a rollover of a PREVIOUS employers 401k--and those funds typically CAN be rolled to an IRA while still working at the new job too.
So this, much like having enough $ to qualify for Plat Honors in the first place, will apply to some, but not all, people.

It's not that it's 5% cash.
It's that it's 5x UR points.
Which for those who travel is much more valuable than 5% cash.
(also you can get 5.25% cash at amazon (or any other online purchase) year round with a BOA card and plat honors status- so that beats both the quarterly cards and the amazon card if you're a non-travelling cashback only person FYI)

I'll use it for Amazon because I don't want random Amazon gift card balances because I have no idea when/if I'll buy something from Amazon. I much prefer a 5% Cashback so I don't have to worry about it.
You clearly dont transfer chase points to airlines. I can get easily twice the 5% back in value
