For $40 difference, I would say go with this one. 2x endurance, DRAM, TLC, low temps, faster speeds.

Buy 2 or more if you need to. Arguably the best Gen 3 nvme out there for laptops and even desktops.

Great drive. Bought in Sept 2022 for $160. This is a no brainer IMO and by all measurements better than the 970 Evo +.

Would also make a great external drive.

While not gen 4 this is still an excellent price for an excellent drive. Have one installed on my laptop, runs noticeably cooler than stock.

I paid $170 for mine back in December… and I thought that was a good deal, this is a buy now think later kinda price!

Anyone else surprised Hynix won't honor their 5-year warranty?

Customer Reviews
The "5-Year Warranty" is a lie
By SunInSouthFlorida in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 10, 2022 I purchased two of these drives. Both are used in the same PC. One day, one went bad.
I thought "no problem, they have a 5-year warranty". Except there is no warranty contact on their website. Supposedly you need to contact them through email ( [email protected] ) -- but no one will reply.
In short .. The "warranty" is a sham.
The drives perform fine for the price, otherwise. see less

Warranty Is non existent and Amazon won't even honor the 5 year.
By Allen B. peterson in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 12, 2022 I bought this and it worked fine for 4 months and now it doesn't work (< 1 year). The site says 5 year warranty but there is no authorized dealers listed on the site nor Amazon will not return it.
I hope I can get a return, but honestly, be careful as Amazon and SK Hynix warranty is non existent. see less

Worst customer experience with SK Hynix
By wk in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 2, 2022 We bought the SK Hynix nvme drive and within 3 months, the drive broke. We understand that things will break but the customer service is poor. We told Amazon and it is out of the return period thus we try to contact SK Hynix in America since it is under the 5 years warranty. When we manage to contact SK Hynix America and the lady answered and replied.
"We are a big corporation, we do not deal with small quantities, we do not sell small volume, we only deal with big companies like Microsoft. We do not deal with you even though you have 5 years warranty on your product. We only deal with big corporation."
"Since the product is under 5 year warranty, in fact I have only used it 3 month, who should I approach in the company?"
"We don't deal with low volume user, we only deal with big corporation, you can go back to your reseller and get the warranty"
"The seller in Amazon is SK Hynix, would you mind that I talk to your manager to sort this out?"
"No, you cannot. I am busy" and she hang up. Well, this would be the last time I would get anything from SK Hynix.

Ok when works, only 30 day warranty

By AP in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 25, 2022 I installed this into my machine and ran some tests. The speed was much slower than advertised so I wanted to call support. Well, that's when the issues started. There is no support in US.
The warranty is as long as Amazon allows returns. Since Hynix has no presence in US they rely on their distributor and dealers to provide support. Obviously, Amazon is not going to do that. If something goes wrong with the product, you can return it to the company with RMA. But who will give you an RMA? Looking at their site, you must work with Amazon to get RMA. Amazon will tell you that this is a marketplace item and you need to work with the manufacturer. Perfect conditions for finger pointing.
So, in short, if you want to buy it, make sure to understand that once Amazon return window closes so will your warranty coverage.
Do yourself a favor and buy a more common brand.

Why not get the Intel 670p 2TB for 33% less?

https://slickdeals.net/f/16507915-2tb-intel-670p-series-m-2-2280-pcie-x4-nvme-qlc-ssd-80-free-shipping?src=rcm_category_h

I doubt the performance difference is noticeable given it is bottlenecked by PCIe gen 3. Am I missing something?

Endurance rating. Intel one is QLC with only 740 TBW whereas Hynix is TLC with 1200 TBW endurance. Hynix is guaranteed to last longer and handle more writes. Also, when the Intel one is filled up to most of its capacity, speed transfers crawl to HDD levels.

Why does it slow to a crawl?

At what storage usage does it do that?

There is also this Solidigm P41 2TB for $95:

https://slickdeals.net/f/16522324-2tb-solidigm-p41-plus-pcie-gen-4-nvme-m-2-qlc-internal-ssd-95-free-shipping?

It's PCIe gen 4 and made by the same company as SK Hynix.

Thanks for pointing out the non-existent warranty. I found it's more prone to data loss during a power outage:
https://www.tomshardware.com/news...-data-loss

I made a mistake about the 85% failure rate of this drive. It was the P31 2.5" SATA SSD that had the 85% failure rate reported by a certain business, not this drive:

sounds like one of those situation where a post purchase 3rd party warranty would be necessary for just in case

How does this compare to the Intel 670p on sale for $80?
I'd go for the 670p at $80 vs P31 at $120. P31 will perform better and is maybe warrantied to last longer, but unless you're really hitting the drive hard, neither of those will matter.

If you want to spend more there's a thread on SD with the Samsung 980 Pro for $150 (2TB). If you're willing to pay $40 for the step up 670p->P31, then you're definitely willing to pay another $30 for the step up P31->980 Pro.

Considering P3 hit sub $200 for 4TB and P3 plus is close to 200 for 4TB if say go for that if you need space. $/TB is better and drives are solid. Not so long ago 2tb drives were 200 bucks. And if you just need an OS drive and some files, go for 1tb or less. 2TB is becoming a wired niche.
Other than that this is a solid drive.

If you live in a consumer friendly state like MA, CA, and I'm sure many others, drop a note to your state government's Office of Inspector General and/or Attorney General. They typically like to take on big companies to squeeze them for fines and penalties. Also, contact the Federal Trade Commission. Have clear, concise documentation, use plain language, make use of "bullet points" to help keep your thoughts succinct and more easily understood at-a-glance by the reader.

At the very least be prepared and serious about doing this and contact Amazon and SK Hynix to let them know you've done your homework and know how and where to file a complaint. No business wants a legal discovery process to be unleashed and able to turn up skeletons in their closet. If your State is serious about consumer protection they WILL be contacting the plaintiffs and those plaintiffs WON'T be able to just brush them off and ignore the inquiries. Well... they can... but the people at those State agencies will then develop a "very keen interest" that has a strong tendency to not end well for that business. And YES, they will even chase a single complaint. Where there's smoke, there's usually fire.

Excellent drive, for a great price! IF you really need the difference in Gen 4 vs Gen 3 (I think 90-95% wouldn't ever be able to tell the difference in speeds etc) then .... Use a Gen4 for your main OS drive, and use 1-2 of these for your storage or "other" drives. Enjoy!

Prices for NVMe drives are getting insanely low. I'd jump on this for my laptop but for the lack of native encryption. That's the only reason I stick with Samsung drives and am eagerly awaiting the 4TB 990 Pro.
