The flat remote was utter garbage.
Yes it can get confusing. Apple TV is hardware, it's a streaming device. Apple TV plus is the subscription platform with monthly or annual rates. Both serve different purposes. The hardware let's you use a multitude of apps (streaming content, YouTube, netflix, games etc.), several people including myself prefer using this over the built in TV apps. Much better interfaces, faster, more reliable network connections, regular updates, better capability to handle 4k video and atmos sound etc. Apple TV plus is the subscription service to watch content that's made by Apple, not everyone is big on it yet. Just a handful of really good shows. Hope this helps.
The point of this is :

1) it may be significantly faster than your built in smart apps
2) it may support apps or features your smart tv does not .
3) this model has a thread radio built in and can be used as the brains for home automation stuff .

Haven't had a TV in over 12 years and just got one and not familiar with all the new tech. I'm a bit confused about the purpose of this. My understanding is Apple TV is a subscription based service, and my smart TV already has an app for Apple TV, so what is the point of this streaming player? You would still need to pay for an Apple TV subscription right?

I switched from a Roku ultra to the latest Apple TV and have been happy with it. It's super responsive and it's integrating with iPhones is great. That said I feel that Roku is more user friendly.

The purpose behind this is when we didn't have smart TVs we used these streaming boxes to make them "smart", if you're happy with your smart there's no need for this. But if your tv interface is laggy and clunky then Apple TV box is pretty good streaming box. The streaming service is Apple TV+

Apple TV is a subscription service but separately also this physical device being sold. You can stream from anything on this (Netflix, hulu, hbo, Disney, Prime, etc.). It's essentially just a more powerful Roku, fire stick, etc. Regardless to if you like this Apple TV, it will certainly be way faster and better in many ways than the tech your TV uses to do the same thing.

You don't NEED an Appke TV. It just adds "additional" capabilities that your tv won't have. It's a luxury. There's an app store similar to your phone where you can download apps (your tv probably only has Netflix and a few other apps), whereas the app store will have any streaming app you can imagine as well as (basic) games and other random apps. The apple tv subscription you mentioned is a separate unrelated service where apple is competing with Netflix etc

I got this on a previous sale. I haven't had time to troubleshoot beyond trying different hdmi cables and ports, but it keeps pausing or cutting out while using any app. Anyone else have this?

Apple TV+ is a subscription service. Apple TV is a streaming device you can use with whatever apps (Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, Youtube, Amazon Prime Video, etc.) or local media (Plex server or AirPlayed from Mac or iOS device) you like.
