Have been watching this router as a potential replacement for a converted $39 t-mobile -> ac68u that still seems to still be working well (with a second hardwired mesh) for 50+ devices.

Still can't bring myself to spend that much on a router that was released in July 2020 (basically 3 months shy of 3 years at this point). I feel like 99-130 would be a slick deal.

TP Link routers generally have more limitations than the Asus routers. Before buying any router, I would search Dong Knows Tech. Lots of information about all of the big brands and how to buy a router. If you take the time, you will learn alot and it will help you make an informed decision about what you need in a router. For me, the AI Mesh upgradeability and the ability to customize the router (a little harder to setup) makes Asus the way to go.

Fantastic router and range. I have 2 smaller S versions. Put Merlin on it: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/ but the hardware is great. The U has the same wireless chip as S but the 2.5GB port and it's 3 or 4-core CPU vs dual-core I believe, and also has 512 RAM vs 256 as the S.

I am getting ~ 600-740 Mbit/s download on wireless real world performance throughout the place with 2 AX86S in AirMesh on 5ghz (Ethernet backhaul). ~940 ish download via ethernet (Comcast 1.2 Gbit/s connection). Same on iPhone 13/14. Super stable connection. Netgear CM1100 modem.

Depending on which firmware you got with this when it shipped, then that could be the cause of the dropouts. I held off updating the firmware for 6 months because the updates caused dropouts and reverting the firmware fixed the issues. Only the latest firmware that came out in Feb allowed me to update without dropouts.

I don't recommend merlin on this router, I had issues with merlin not working right. Merlin is great for the older AC68U/Tmobile routers but my experience with on this router was not good.

Rocking my RT-AC86U for awhile now.

No issues covering my house in 5ghz, and can pick up signal outside my property boundaries (2.4)

What would happen to the mesh if I join it with my two old TMobile flashed ac1900-ac68u? Will the wifi6 drop to wifi when I'm near the TMobile ones? Or is everything downgraded to regular wifi?
I tried pairing a blue cave with an ac86s and while it worked it would say ethernet backhaul not working when it most certainly was and pinning devices to a certain node didn't work right as well. Other features specific to wifi6 simply doesn't allow them either cause one node isn't wifi 6. Save your $$ and don't mix ai mesh wifi 6 and 5 devices.

Which version of Merlin's firmware are you not recommending?

Been using AsusMerlin 388.1 for a month or so on my RT-AX86U without issue and 388.1 has only been available since December 3, 2022. Major change from the 386.x firmwares.

From reading more than I probably need to on snbforums(dot)com, it appears what works well for one situation works poorly for others. Interference from transformers, microwaves, electrical wiring, etc and walls that block signal can make any router look like junk on wireless.

Excellent router, have two in AiMesh and works fantastic (might just sell the second as it probably is not needed in my house).

Only router I've ever had that literally runs for months without an issue.

Meanwhile, my $50 re-flashed T-Mobile AC68U on Merlin still running like a tank for four years and without needing a reboot in over a year. For the price to performance, this router really spoiled me and made me a big fan of Asus.

The next router better be able to run Chat-GPT or something to compel me to upgrade.

Firmware makes a big difference. Asuswrt-Merlin is the one to go with. Plenty of discussion on which fw is best and most stable on SNBForums:

https://www.snbforums.com/forums/...merlin.42/
I've been an Asus devotee for years though from interactions with the geeks on the SNB forum, most say Merlin is best for those who require the advanced features..I'm upgrading from the AC68P to the AX68U which will arrive in the next week or so. That said, I've found ASWRT firmware to work nicely and be very stable as well..are you suggesting its inferior for the average user who may only have a few WiFi devices in their home?

For the average user stock firmware would be fine. My point was they may have needed to update fw to see better performance, as not all perform well. Sometimes downgrading is better if latest is buggy.

Thanks..that pretty much confirms what I've been told by the more senior SNB members..the firmware for the AX68U hasn't been updated since Dec 22 but I suspect it will be coming soon especially since the AC68P update was released this month Smilie

Love this router. Been using 2 of them since release date back in 2020 and its been pretty solid. Only issues i've seen is sometimes with shotty firmware releases and i have to go back to a previous release. Use the second as a aimesh node to get coverage over my whole property (over 3000 sqft home on 8000 sqft lot). I can get up to about 750Mbs on the wireless network. My setup supports about 60+ devices.

Just returned this router. Was hoping the range was going to be improved from my 6 year old TP-Link router, but it was at best the same. 5ghz had frequent disconnects just one story below in my house. The software was great but performance pretty lackluster given the price.
Time for a mesh system maybe? ASUS Zenwifi and tp-link Deco systems offer great options.

I had various bugs with a few different versions, but all different issues like 160mhz channels not working on one version, or odd dns issues where certain sites would never load. It might have been the same with the Asus firmware because I couldn't use those either with out dropouts and I stuck to an older version until this Feb release which has been working great for me.

Just to chime in this is the best router i've ever owned. I have an older house so normal routers couldn't punch through the walls like this one can.

Last month I was successful in using a blue cave in a garage as an AI Mesh node with my AX86U with it being wired through a powerline adapter. The devices near it initially connected but after a few power outages, the only thing that will connect to the blue cave is the wired LAN connection for a Wyze outdoor hub. There was a period of 3 hours of undervoltage and surges due to a loose power line. I had 2 one-outlet Belkin 1080j and one cyberpower surge protectors die after that (one was on a fridge and the other was on the blue cave).
Everything still connects to my AX86U even though I dropped the signal strength in settings down to middle of the slider (balance). I'm going to try a used AC86U to replace the blue cave and see how it goes. I may drop the signal strength more when I connect an old AC86U as an AI Mesh node.

I have an AC-68P wired to the AX86U and that has been working great as an AI Mesh node.

I know I can't set the "ethernet backhaul" function from the AX86U because it says the blue cave doesn't support it. I can set Backhaul Connection Priority to "Ethernet first" in the management tab (AI Mesh menu on left then click on Blue Cave, then management tab on right). It does connect via ethernet all the time. One time the kids knocked the powerline adapter out and it was wireless but once I plugged it back in it went back to ethernet backhaul.

I went thru 2 AX86's last year and returned them and kept my trusty AC86U (runs solid, no issues whatsoever with Wifi 5 even a couple of Wifi 6 devices i own). Mainly the AX86U rebooted on its own several times even after clean firmware upgrade. Could have been my bad luck!. In any case, waiting for Wifi 7 routers to hit mainstream in another 1 to 2 years before upgrading.
I had that rebooting issue also and it ended up being because I was using dfs channels. If the router detects radar it will change the channel and cause a reboot. Once I disabled dfs channels I get no more reboots.
