Tx! Have an older DS1512+ and just had a HD crash. It's been so reliable for over 10+ years but now showing it's age when I noticed it no longer gets the DSM updates (stuck at 6.2x) and HD choices are minimal. I think I'll be saving now for Black Friday.

Also seems like these Seagate Ironwolf drives are taking over vs WD Red. Anyone have extra insight? Cheaper? Better performance? BOTH???
ok. personally I don't have experience either of NAS drives. Most people seems here buy WD and also they are in sale very often.

Newbie question. I have an old 4tb external hard drive (10 years old at least) that's hooked up to my computer. Been thinking changing to a NAS so I have like a personal cloud storage at home. I mainly backup photos, files, videos, maybe some installer (exe). I don't mind if I have to transfer the file to a pc before playing it. Would the 923+ be overkill for what I need?

Xpenology is the way to go. I have multiple systems working rock solid for years from DSM 5 to DSM 6, 7 etc. Just don't mess with them and they work just fine.
Personally, after 6 years of dealing with Xpenology, I find it to be a disaster.

Synology is constantly releasing patches to break Xpenology. First Synology started scanning for non-standard hardware, and would refuse to boot the kernel if they detected hardware they didn't sell.

For awhile, people (like myself) were resorting to buying the same peripherals (LAN cards, for example) to get around that.

Synology finally managed to break Jun's bootloader on 6.2.1, and for nearly 2 years, the only solution was to not update with the latest vulnerability patches Frown Worse, if you ask if Jun, or anyone else, was working on a fix on the Xpenology forum, the thread would be deleted - no one wanted to talk about it.

Then Red Pill came out, and the war with Synology started all over with 7.x. Now every time a patch comes out, everyone races to the Xpenology forum to see if it breaks Red Pill.

Quite frankly, it's not worth the hassle.

So true, but if you have a particular build working and you don't apply patches, it stays stable.

You agree, right?

Yes, when you get everything lined-up, it works great. The Synology OS is spectacular, and third party support is awesome.

I primarily use my NaS for storage, subsequently one of my old Thecus N2520 running DSM 5.2 update 55267 is still on it and I have dual 8Tb drives in it running without issues for 5 plus years now.

The newer well for me HP n54l I did upgrade to DSM 6.1.X but not going further due to the trial error method I cannot afford downtime so it just stays on that build. I did upgrade it to 16GB memory and the AMD cpu easily handles my plex needs granted I only have 1 or 2 users I don't share my library. Also run docker, Virtual Box , torrent manager etc and it's been working quite well for me.

I get it's not for everyone, especially if you want to DIY Xpenology but keep your box very up to date..then you risk breaking your existing stable setup. Which I dont..i first test on another machine and see if it's worth my time to update. Also Unless you expose your NaS directly by port forwarding to the internet which no one should *rather use OpenVPn, tailscale or zero tier.. why does it matter you be on the latest build? Most necessary features like BTRFS, SHR enhancements etc are all mostly same since 5x maybe 6x is most you need.

Do we really need to be on DSM 7.0?

Again this Xpenology is not for everyone. Only you can decide.

I did just order a z690/12600k to replace my htpc bones. So I will have a 6700k, 32gb ram itx combo I could use for a build. I would just need a case. I think I even have an extra new itx psu in my closet, 750 platinum. I would put that in the htpc and move the older one I to the nas.

Hmmmm.... What to do
I say go for it, learning curve is a bit, but once you know, you can build it faster and cheaper 😁

^ This is the key thing here. People always post about how you can build or buy a box to be a NAS that's cheaper or better than something like a Synology. I worked in IT for a lot of years and the last thing I want to do when I get home is tinker with stuff like this after tinkering with stuff at work. I want to buy something purpose-made that does what it's made to do and I don't have to think about it. I'm very happy with my Synology even if it cost more, or, is less powerful than, a similarly spec'd homemade system.
That makes sense that if you work in IT you don't want to come home and do the same in your free time. Some people like tinkering with hardware though. It's kind of like a hobby for people to DIY. They get a sense of accomplishment from it, and saving money with better performance is a great bonus.

This series can't transcode 4k. BEWARE. The previous version 920+ could accomplish this
