This game is phenomenally good. I personally have 400+ hours played, and still love it. To quote what someone else said:
All DLC is cosmetic only. The base game has a TON of unlockable cosmetics by itself.
There are NO microtransactions. Everything is unlocked in game.
There are NO loot boxes. Everything is unlocked in game.
There is no gambling, no gacha mechanics, forced ads, paywalls, timewalls or any of the usual nonsense.
There is a battle pass. It is free. When the battle pass ends any item you didn't get gets put into the base game like a regular item. No FOMO.
You can play with friends, with randoms or by yourself, each session being completable and enjoyable in its own way.
It has mod support.
Great community. Wonderful devs. Fun game.

Do consider getting him his own account and copy, it's a pain to share an account or library for online games as it will only allow one session at a time. If you were however to play primarily offline games then it's much easier to balance.
Great game that seems to be adding new content almost time I revisit it. I've been playing since alpha+early access and the game has made very impressive strides and development since then.
My only real complaints are that there are a lot of problems and bugs with the modding system, and also the fact that you don't have the option to load the game directly into a menu, you always have to load the space station map first and have your character physically access any of the game features exclusively through in game interface terminals within the map. This becomes a significant problem when there are connectivity issues or when you are downloading and applying new mods, which then require you to unload and then reload the station map or even reload the entire game to apply correctly.
I would very much like a simple menu interface when I first start up the game rather than being forced to -sometimes repeatedly- reload the space station map in order to make changes or check for active game hosts.
Those are my main gripes about the game, I've submitted them as feature+bug fix requests a couple of times since last year and haven't heard or seen anything. If you agree with these suggestions, please submit them to the developer to request the changes, maybe hearing from more customers will help encourage the fix.
Other than that, I think that it's a very fun game, and with mods applied (including an eight player mod, quality of life fixes, and swarm "starship troopers" mod s, among others) it makes for an exciting and surprisingly intense game. I do recommend! 👍
