Nice deal, Pity I still have the Ink Business Preferred active and just applied for Freedom Unlimited... A word of caution with their UR Travel service. I had very negative experience with them lately.

On one occasion, I planned my conference and booked the hotel with UR Travel instead of using the conference link. The price was similar, so I decided to earn a few points... That was bad choice because:

They charged the full amount immediately instead of placing a hold.
When I wanted to shorten my stay, it took me almost 2 hour on the phone to change it. And even then, their portal still shows the old travel dates and it took them 2 weeks to refund the difference, so that I had to pay the balance first.
On the other occasion, I tried to book a cruise with them - even worse headache. They do have some cruises online but not all of them. And definitely they don't have any of the optional packages the cruise lines now have to sweeten the deal. My cruise was not available on the portal so I ended up spending 2-3 hours on the phone with very ignorant UR rewards employee who wanted nothing more than to end the call.

And most importantly... The Ultimate Rewards Travel has been outsorurced abroad, to multiple call centers in at least 2 multiple locations (I heard 2 different type of accents, both equally bad). The UR Travel call center used to be 100% English speaking, very knowledgeable, very nice and attentive representatives. Not anymore. Upon your call you are getting to the badly accented employee who is clueless as to what you are asking such that you have to repeat yourself 2-3 times. Mid you, English is my second language too, so I don't mind repeating, knowing that my accent is also bad. But I also know that it is not that bad so I have to repeat myself so much so it gets tiring. There is also bad lag between you talking and call center responding. This is confirmed on every occasion I had to interact with them. The only way to solve this is to immediately request the US Representative. At least for now this works, but who knows for how long.
Thanks for the heads up. Refer my wife to sign up. That's 15k for referral and 80,000 once the spending requirements are met.
That's what OP said. 80k + 10k in branch.

I mean, to maximize it 100%, sure... but it's easy to get over $550 in value without it.

So you're saying you do NOT already have global entry or precheck?

Because I fly a decent bit and never take more than 5-15 minutes to get through security with it.

Guess that $100 credit WOULD be full value to you!

Also besides the lounge you can get $56 for 2 in restaurant credit at over 2 dozen airport restaurants with priority pass.

No but it has often saved me the price of a meal at the airport- and 1 or 2 guests that price as well. Both ways- plus at any connecting one with a layover.

Also the price of a drink or two if we wanted one.

I've gotten north of $300 on ONE roundtrip in value like this- let alone more than 1 trip.

Why would you NOT?

A hard put is a couple point hit, that typically rebounds in a few months, and ages off your report completely in 24 months.

What BETTER uses for a hard pull do you have?

Correct.

For example I just cited buying a $7000 plane ticket with roughly the # of points you get with this signup offer.

But even ignoring that it should be trivially easy to get a lot more than $1200, even sticking just to Hyatt hotels or coach travel.

You forgot the $180 a year in Instacart credits ($15 a month).
You forgot the free 12 months of instacart+ and Dashpass ($99 and $99)
You forgot the $5/mo door dash credit
You forgot the $10/mo Gopuff credit
You forgot the up to 2 free years of Lyft Pink ($199 worth of credit)

That's $760 worth of credits. Even if you only used 1/4 of them you'd be easily profitable on the card.

And that's without putting a more reasonable value on the airport lounge access for most folks than you did....or counting the value of getting primary rental car insurance... or any of the other travel insurances the card offers.
I shall respond to both of your posts here, in order:
  • The goalposts are pretty far to begin with. Its not just $800, or $1000 (or $1200 with the reserve). I mean on paper it is. Of course. Just you gotta find max value for it which for some people is a challenge. I fly to Colombia a lot. So to find max value with it is tough. For example, you bring up Avios for AA flights. Looks great. But they don't support PEI (Pereira) airport, only BOG and MDE with respect to AA flights in Colombia. So, I'm SOL there (the 60,000 pts I just used were AA miles I got with the AA $95/yr barclays card signup bonus a couple years ago. I booked from PEI, which was great). If you are just a casual flyer domestically with no interest in flying international, or if you do the rare international trip and don't want to spend on business and get the most TRIPS for the points (as I noted previous), then the value is the same as normal ($0.01-$0.014/point). I 100% acknowledge the increased value to business class, just some people want more flights, not a single improved experience.
  • Yes, I know you can book partner airlines because of the shared rewards system (e.g. Avianca & Copa with United points), but the value isn't there. Example flight, IAD to BOG, July 19. United gives me the option to book the COPA IAD-PTY-BOG flight at 424PM arriving at 1106PM. They both charge only a mere $21.85 in tax. United wants 50,000 miles, COPA wants 30,000. I can't seem to book the non-stop Avianca flight, it is not an option with miles in United. But it does let you book it if you are paying with cash, the cost of which is astronomical compared to Avianca's website ($2200 vs $400). AirFrance is a Delta partner, but again, US to Colombia not an option even just to buy the ticket with cash.

As an aside, I know everyone loves them sum Lifemiles. All I'll say is that Avianca has become shit. They are now Spirit - no food, no drinks, no reclining seats, 29?30? inch space. It is terrible. So my future with Lifemiles will be limited going forward. It looks like Lifemiles lets you book Star Alliance and United, but the options are sh~t compared to what is offered by COPA and United.

Everyone's situation is different, I know.
  • Apologies, you are correct regarding lifemiles. AMEX MR, CITI TYR, CapitalOne Miles all transfer 1:1, while Brex and Marriott are less than 1:1. I will go back to my previous points about Lifemiles, so it is not a great idea if you ask me. But to each their own.
  • Avios looks good, but as previously mentioned, you are limited to MDE and BOG. Cartagena and Pereira are not included. Alaska doesnt let you book American to Colombia even with miles. So again, it is a YMMV thing with routes.
  • I applaud you and am very jealous of people who can make the miles work for them and get a business class ticket while getting over $0.02/mile value. I 100% acknowledge that this is the main benefit of getting these miles. Just every person's situation is different, and most (myself included) are looking to maximize number of flights in economy and not maximize value on a singular flight in business. Doing that, you will continue to be limited to $0.01-$0.014/mile.
  • I already have GE. I got one for myself with the CapOne Venture card when it was free for the first year with a 75k bonus. I got it for my wife with the United Explorer when the deal was 60k+10k first year free. And I paid out of pocket for my daughter. So we are good until 2026 I think.
  • I will acquiesce that meals do add up. 100% agree. We flew home one time through BOG and they changed the itinerary on us such that we had a 3 hour layover. Got through security quick and paid $30x2 (daughter was free) to get into the El Dorado A+ lounge. Food was great, even for 2021 mid-COVID. We needed to eat, which would have cost around $10-12/person in the terminal, and we got a small play area for my daughter plus good space to change her. But like I said, this rarely happens. Our layovers are usually 2 hours max. With check-in, with customs (in Colombia), with security, with the walk, we really only have 45 min to play with. In the US, yes, pre-check is quick, but that's not the holdup: latin american airlines are horrible with check-in. But in the US the lounges are pretty crap compared to international offerings. I think the lounges at IAD and DCA dont offter great food. Food in Colombia is cheap, if we have the time to eat. Food in the US is expensive...if my wife chooses to consume from the airport (which is rare)...or if things are open. Many times we fly to Colombia late at night when everything, including lounges, are closed.
  • Hard pull is dicey, especially if you have more than 0 outstanding on your credit history. Because I have 2 currently (one from Wells Fargo I think?, one from Upgrade LineOfCredit), it usually negative affects my ability to get good rates with some of the national insurance providers. So while I don't pay for it in credit miles, I pay for it in insurance rates...among other rates I inquire about (I have 800+ credit score btw). Thankfully I dont need a mortgage anytime soon. The Upgrade LineOfCredit card netted me $500 cash while spending a measly $10 or something? So I am slowly waiting for those hard pulls to disappear. $800 (or $1000/$1200) certainly provides good value for a hard pull, but everyone's situation is different.
  • I figured you would bring up all those credits for services. And sure, they do add up to well over $700. I didn't want to mention it because not everyone uses these services, so they have no value to some people (e.g. myself). Instacart, Dash, GoPuff no use. Lyft I use very sparingly, maybe 1 ride every 6 months? if that? Lyft Pink provides me no value.
  • The insurances are nice. I'll give you that.

Everyone is different, which is why I made that list of stipulations. To really make full use of this card and justify its high cost (now $550), you need to travel a LOT so as to use the $300 in credits, you need to constantly put yourself in a position to use the lounges (i.e. arrive at the airport early enough to use the lounge long enough to feel like you got value), you really should come in without Global Entry so you can use that $100 credit immediately, you have a lot of "everything else" category costs so as to minimize the lost value versus organically spreading purchases on higher-cashback cards (insurance and medical payments are a great opportunity, for example), you have a plan in mind to use those points quickly if you dont wish to stay past one year so you can get the 50% benefit, you use Instacart/Dash/GoPuff/Lyft frequently.

Like I said, 80,000 points/$800 is nothing to write home about. $800 on $4000 spend is 20%, which the industry normal for bonuses (the highest I've ever seen was 50% CapitalOne SAVOR and QuickSilver, $250 bonus on $500 spend). Pushing it to $1000/$1200 makes it higher which is very nice. 25% and 30% are great! Just if you are looking to get the card, just be aware of how to get max value since the card isn't free and is a hard pull.

Dang. The Points Guy had on their website that this deal was good until 5/25…I guess until 5/25 is different than through 5/25.

Does anyone know if it's four months from the date you were approved or when you activate the card? I shouldn't have any issues meeting the requirement, but just curious. I have another card I need to meet a dollar amount, so....

Spending requirement is 3 months, not 4 months.

Very quickly which has been the sentiment here and with us when we met it. I'd say within days and at the latest by end of statement cycle. They're super quick with it. I wouldn't be surprised if it hit as soon as you met the 4000.
