So I did a good job finding this lol

I tried to get an Onkyo 7100 for $659 open box last week, basically the non-elite version of this receiver (although the 7100 has a component input, which the 305 doesn't have), but it was out of stock the whole week. I'm glad I waited, because I got the Aventage A4A for $779 open box this week to replace an Onkyo 6050.
I actually have a 305 in my basement, and I like it, but feel the Yamaha has slightly better sound, more features, pre-outs, and much better build quality (it weighs 35 frickin pounds). This is still a great deal deal if you need 9 channels or have to check out DIRAC. It's unlikely to get better than this.

Also one big difference I don't hear enough about the 305 and the 7100 is the warranty difference. The Onkyo has 2 years versus 3 for the Pioneer.
I would get the Pioneer just for that fact alone.

People after Dirac will consider this slick, without it it wouldn't be IMO.
The reason others cost more, they have preouts and brand preference.
Comes down to what you want and or need.
Compared to 1k everywhere else? I'd say yes. But read some of the cons others have written if you're an audiophile and make your own conclusions from there.
That said, either of the receivers is overkill for your speakers. Quite honestly, your speakers may be more due for an upgrade than your receiver (unless you are adding channels etc).
