Note, in title it says open box, but when you look at kit show details, it doesn't say open box, so it might be new I went with open box, just to be safe
Seems like a good deal but store likely have only a couple of bodies. Plus since Lumix introduced phase detect autofocus it's better to wait for a new mft system with hybrid autofocus unless you don't need autofocus
1st. GH6 has a lot more pro video functions that OM-D doesn't have, such as slow motion 120 fps, ProRes 422, ssd direct recording, V-Log. they don't compete at all if you doing video anything.
2nd. Olympus OM-D is dead. it is now OM systems. what does OM systems has resource wise? none. the OM series is now in limbo, like pentax. expect very few firmware updates, very few hardware updates aside form whatever that was developed when the brand was still under olympus.
i like the OMD system, and i have an extensive collection of their lenses, but i just cannot recommand om system to anyone with 1. MFT now cost as much as APS-C and sometimes FF, 2. APS-C and FF body is just as small, and equivalent lens is just as light. and 3. OMD is essential dead.
Bought this when it came out over a year ago. Autofocus on this was much improved from previous lumix cameras. Yes it's not phase detect but it is very close. I have no problem with interviews with autofocus. Every now and then I may lose a shot but I had that with my phase detect Sony's as well.
Pro's:
-Image stabilization is best in the business.
-4k 120, 1080p 300fps
-Records direct 4k Pro-Res and Carrie's internal LUTs.
-Color science and skin tones are really good.
-Great Ergos
-Never overheats
Cons:
-Should have been released with Phase Detect AF.
-Body is on the large side with internal cooling system

Thank you for the additional details. Do you know if this is comparable to a Sony a7 III OR IV?
Of course not. The Panasonic has 25% of the sensor area with all that defines for DOF, low light sensitivity and dynamic range; and the GH6 is missing a modern auto focus system. At some price point, this is a neat camera but not at anything like $1300 for a used camera. (Yes, USED. Find the other "open box" cameras in the USED EQUIPMENT section here: https://www.adorama.com/Used )
For what it's worth, this looks to be on backorder now. I was just looking at Amazon last week (and confirmed just now), and they have brand new bodies for the same price with a $400 instant coupon on the page for prime members (shipped and sold by Amazon).
beware, i purchased the amazon one, it says its brand new, but i received an open box model, i had a chat with amazon and i could return it and place a new order hoping i'll receive a new unopened model or they could give a $25 voucher, i took the voucher and im basically testing the camera for a couple weeks, but so far it's been great, i already have a gh5 and a g95, so i'm quite invested in the MFT system.
Is this better than a Sonya6400 for shooting youtube? Pardon my ignorance but in the market for a 4k camera for video and a bit of photos before taking trips this year.
These are not actually open box, they seem to be just getting rid of some units. The one I got for my partner was new. (from Adorama)
If you've never had a professional camera before and are interested in video, but are concerned about price vs. quality... this is likely the best deal you'll find this year.
background:
I've been filming for 15 years from camcorders to cinema cameras and the most fun I've had with a camera was with the GH5. sample 1[youtube.com]sample 2[youtube.com]
As for must-have accessories...
-Cage
-Metabones (or Viltrox) EF-MFT speed booster
-Side strap/wrist handle $25
-a good variable ND or matte box setup is a requirement for this camera. I used the heliopan variable ND
-if i could only buy 3 lenses for this camera, I'd get the
sigma 18-35mm Art EF,
the canon 70-200 EF
nd the lumix 12-35 vario ii 2.8
The sensor is only MFT, but as long as you set everything properly nobody will ever know =)
I do also like that the camera has 6 custom setting modes, so with a spin of a dial you can swap between fast/slow.
Good to sneak into a club.
I rarely take photos, but this cam can take photos, and is better than a cell phone, so what more can you ask for in a video camera?

We don't know if it's used or just returned or demo but opened box comes with 1 full year of manufacturer warranty and if Lumix still offers the deal it can be extended to 3 years upon registration the camera on their website.
