Could this be an alternative to ikea wooden tops for computer desks?
Yes. I used this plus the dual motor leg option from mono price to build a standing desk.

I added a monitor arm to have dual monitors mounted to it. Added a UPC battery backup mounted underneath it as well.

I'm on the fence. My current desk is only about 24" deep and I'm okay with it, so this is a p cheap price for a finished piece of wood. But I see Floor & Decor has a 60 x 30in. butcher block for $150, but it's unfinished.
That floor & decor piece is rough. It comes in a box so you cannot see it, lots of filler and lots of markings still on it. Took a few hours to sand it down but it does come out nice.

Used the Home Depot block for my desk, used the floor and decor due to the size for my wife's desk.

Cool, that p much settles it for me then. I guess if I want the extra space (and have the free time to finish some wood) I can always take it off and replace it. For some reason the Husky block wanted $55 for delivery even though it still says "free delivery" when I search for it, but Home Depot was able to take it off for me which was nice

To everyone talking about staining and refinishing: this piece has a very tough clear finish already. It would take an insane amount of sanding to get to a point where you could stain it, and I guarantee you you're not gonna be able to sand enough and it's gonna end up looking like pure a$$.

Also, you don't need to epoxy or poly this.

Source: I have the actual workbench with this top and it's plenty tough.

For those wanting an even cheaper alternative for a desk top... IKEA SÄLJAN.

It may not be solid wood but it's for a desk, and I've yet to cause any real damage to the laminate and I work from home

My local home depot in garden Grove hard the darker stained one for 80%. 50% off. They had at least a dozen of them in store.

for what you're getting the price seems awfully high.
I spent about 150% more on mine, granted mine is deeper (34" I believe), and it was bought during higher wood prices near the start of the pandemic. For an adjustable standing desk. I don't regret it, I'm going to have it for a long time.

Would like to use this for a desk, but need 42" or less. Would HD cut this down?
Just buy a smaller piece, unless you really think you can do something with the leftover. Longer boards are more expensive, it doesn't make sense to buy 6' when you need 4'.

That tool box is 72" x 22" and the wood top is 72" x 24" so you would need to trim off a few inches. Measure twice, cut once.
Or just leave a lip. Nobody ever complains about an extra 2 inches.

Just what I was looking for thanks! Only shows one and only option for delivery same day though so extra $35. Doesn't tell me which store is coming from and they all show unavailable around me. Any ideas on how to figure it out?
NVM now showing ship to store option as well...look like they replenished the stock.

$8 a board foot for crap wood isn't a good deal.
If you're buying it it immediately cut it into pieces to use as lumber.

You can't use BF for a finished product. A $200 endgrain cutting board is like 2bf of lumber that I can get for $7/bf. Does that make the cutting board overpriced?

Hint:no. Labor, tools and overhead, etc all cost money.

You are better off with a 36x80 Solid core interior door. You can make two WIDE desks with it. Ofc, you'd have to ask if they'd cut it in half in the store.

Yes, I am using one now with a monoprice dual motor stand. All together less than 300 for a quality standing desk

Anyone else not seeing free shipping? I tried to order this earlier, but it keeps reverting to $55 delivery.
