It's the same price on Samsung's website. If you qualify for an EPP discount, it's $99.

Does this particular model have more problems than other EVO? I couldn't find much so far, but the price makes me second guess it. (Have 3 machines with smaller samsung drives)
There have been widespread reports of early failures and data loss with this model. The issue may or may not have been resolved. Personally, I'm still wary. It's predecessor (the 860 EVO) was rock solid.

Oh crap. Maybe I will cancel. Seems like the problems were limited to 2TB and larger from what I read, even if now fixed.

By the way, for anyone who orders directly from Samsung, they have an extra discount for military, medical, first responders.

searching the net, i see that sammy has some quality control issue or maybe that's just the defects in manufacturing. most failures i see are from the 4 tb and maybe a slim few from the 2tb one's. i think even with the info i round, i would still buy one if i needed one. i would maybe just try to make it a point to write about 11tb on it or fill up the drive about 2 times and see if anything bad happens to the nands. just to test it and if that works you should have a good drive. if i see any bad sectors on the drive after the test, i would just return it and get another one.

Or buy the 1TB if that amount works for you. It's also on sale, $60 from Samsung minus CB minus possible med/military/FR discount, and less likely headache.

My memory is a bit hazy, so don't quote me on this but I seem to recall seeing things that made me think the issue was not limited to just the larger capacity drives.

I don't think your suggestion for testing would be sufficient. Everything I've seen seems to indicate that the degradation happens over time, usually a number of months. Such an issue would likely not be apparent right away, even with several full drive writes.

This is mostly speculation but I would not be surprised if the issue was the result of the cells quickly (relatively speaking) losing their charge, possibly due to a defect in the NAND. It seems to happen gradually and people often don't notice until they try to read something that has reached degradation severe enough that the ECC cannot correct it. The drives that completely fail could be a result of something critical, like the FTL, being affected. Again, this is speculation, however it's something that initial testing would be unlikely to detect.

I don't have an 870 EVO, so I can't comment from personal experience. However, I do have a couple different Samsung flash drives and I recently noticed that their read speeds have absolutely tanked (from 400MB/s to 5MB/s) when reading some data that was written only a few months ago. I'm now concerned that these drives may also be affected. This level of performance degradation should not be happening.

I had a 2TB 870 Evo that took around 1 year before I noticed extreme amounts of SMART errors. I got an RMA for it and I have been using the replacement drive also for a year. Fingers crossed!

Good to know. I guess/speculate that someone's cutting corners. Maybe better to avoid this brand for the time being.

Do you periodically scan the replacement drive for issues? I believe Samsung Magician has this feature. You could also try third-party utilities like HDDScan. Checking the SMART data is also a good idea. This could give you some peace of mind, or alert you to issues before they become more severe.

Actually I have not but since you reminded me, I'll probably do a scan soon.

any advantage in buying from one merchant over another? amazon vs samsung, say. seems like a lot of samsung sd cards on amazon are fake and it's better to buy directly from samsung. is it the same case with these drives?
I received a 1tb as a gift and it had 200gb of reads and writes on it, marked as new from Amazon. Just use some software to make sure its new like crystal disk info.

My samsung magician didn't give me any notifications about my failing 970 evo plus. Not even a year old and it took a dump. Waiting on the RMA now.

Did you ever run a full scan (not just check the SMART values or run a short test)?

It's stuck in read only, my pc wouldn't boot and I couldn't restore my OS using SFC scan or DISM. When I decided to use samsung magician again it wouldn't even detect the drive as a Samsung one but it had no problem listing my other Samsung drive or western digital.
