I would never take my vehicle to a dealer, those places always hire unqualified wannabe mechanics. They're always hiring and firing, now if they would put their ASE mechanics to change oil that would be a different story.
You want a person making 50 to 100k a year changing your oil? Hahaha. You are correct that the tire guys and oil change guys at big shops get paid very poorly. My cousin manages a Chevy service garage. He says they pay those guys $12/Hr.

Word of advice: Read the manual and learn to do things yourself. Long gone are the days where you have to change oil every 3,000 miles, most cars now do 10,000 mi depending on what you have. People who designed the cars no way more than these wannabe mechanics, since you know, they have engineering degrees.

I refuse to go to an oil change place when I realized I know more than all these people combined together. If you don't have time to do it yourself, that's understandable and that's your choice. You choose to take that luxury and there's nothing wrong with that. If you don't have time to read the manual, then you're just lazy and deserve to be taken advantage of.

p.s. : I don't have a horse in this race, I have two EVs, I don't need to do oil changes, but just want to pass along something I learned in life.

Only reason I'm hunting for this is I have aftermarket warranty(aka service contract) and they want records when things go sideways. Else I pretty much wrench my stuff.

And my car takes only 9.5qt of oil. So need a small fortune each time

this doesn't say how much the oil change is after the coupon. for example only says$25 off full synthetic or blend. I guess a trick to get you there to rip you off.
do they also do the "free complimentary maintenance check" scam like al the dealer shops?
you know they throw in this free checks with oil change to lie to you about thousands in repair you need?
You must have visited every oil change place in the USA!

I just walked in from VOIC using this coupon.
They aspirated the oil through the top Engine Bay.
And even their notes say "Drain plug not removed".

I thought car manufacturer manual states the drain plug gasket must be changed with each oil change ??? I have an '08 Camry 4cyl

Perhaps this is what they do when their service bay technician calls in sick for the day? Alternately, an incredibly generous but otherwise unfounded guess could be that they attempted but failed to remove your drain plug within reasonable limits of the specified torque and thus opted for this method... but then somehow didn't advise you? Your vehicle is incredibly mainstream and changing the oil filter would still require getting underneath the car - speaking of which, you may want to check to confirm that the oil filter was exchanged. For what they charge, you could buy your own extractor. Using an oil extractor for your '08 still leaves you having to lift your car to reach (and deal with the mess) of replacing the filter. Nowhere near as easy as my old '89 Camry where the filter sat on top of the engine making it an ideal candidate for extractor-type oil changes for fastidious DIYers.

Good luck!
Jon

Correct me if I'm wrong, these places suck the oil out from the top and don't change the filter or anything else, right? Or do they change the filter? And like someone else mentioned, they likely never touch/change the drain plug/gasket.

I heard Walmart does it by the sucker method.

Because prices are set by the individual operator (who may own one or more locations).

Other than documentation captured via sources like Google Maps, you may want to see if your local franchisee has offers in Groupon which indirectly would provide you the full retail price... that no one should actually be paying!

Good luck!

Oil extraction is far from an industry standard practice for any major oil chain - in particular, express oil lube locations benefit from the speed of draining through the plug. Any place that doesn't change the oil filter is creating a significant liability.

Although Wal-Mart oil change locations are located within Wal-Marts, they operate like optometrist offices attached to a Costco* - they're under a shared roof but aren't necessarily operated by the building owner. As such, there's not a universal Wal-Mart oil change location standard in the way that the aisles and offerings of a Wal-Mart retail store tend to be standardized.

Good luck!
Jon

* Or for some localities, the liquor store attached outside the Costco(!)

Guessing a big V8?

Have you considered finding a local mechanic with whom you could work out a reasonable price that provides you the desired record-keeping, them a nice little relationship (bring donuts!), and you the opportunity to select premium options (like synthetic oil) without the highway robbery that is the upcharge you're incurring for those extra quarts?

Good luck!
Jon
