The full size shields are great - the tube models are buggy and require regular reboots. Have had 3 of each for years and that's true across all of them.

I've read these things suck compared to the full size one. Anybody have any insight?
I have both. The pro version is much better - quicker, plex server works, has ports, better at running emulation. However, I would still get the cylinder version at this price

Still overpriced if you don't game and want to use just to get the best android tv experience. Crashes and needs to be rebooted or remote disconnects. Frustrating experience especially when you pay these prices.

Just get the ONN thing for $20 at Wallyworld + $2 for the 2-year replacement warranty.
Not in the same league. ONN is the bottom tier of Android TV streaming devices. At least recommend Chromecast 4K with Google TV.
Honestly at this point it's hard to recommend NVIDIA Shield (either pro or regular) anymore. 2 years ago this price would've been an instant buy for me. But right now there are better devices with better values out there.
If you just care about streaming and not local media playback, just get the Chromecast 4K or the new Xiaomi Mi TV Box S (2nd gen). If you care about having a powerful device with local playback in addiiton to streaming, get one of the Homatics Box R 4k Plus / Dune HD / Nokia 8010 / RockTek G2 / SEI804HM devices.

Does the toilet paper roll work well as a plex client? Have a ton of 4k mkv that the Xbox app can't play for sh**

I have one of the tube style. Its total garbage and crashes all the time. Really a shame because I love the Shield Pro - we have 8 - one on every TV and the pro version works great. Id avoid this version like the plague though.

The Onn is nearly identical to the Chromecast. The big differences are that the Onn omits Dolby Vision and Atmos. If you need those, fork over an additional $10 to get it with the Chromecast. If you're just buying something for a smaller bedroom or you're using grey market apps, you probably don't need the Dolby Vision or Atmos anyway. Additionally, I've read about a good amount of bugs with the Chromecast, so take your chances there as well.
Neither the Onn or Chromecast are direct competition for the Shields, but for anyone who isn't gaming, or using Plex transcoding, the shield is wholely unnecessary.

not to mention the microSD card is near impossible to take out easily and I actually have to use pliers every time so I try to avoid it
