BESSEY GearKlamp 24 in. Capacity Fast-Action Bar Clamp with 2-3/8 in. Throat Depth
Product Description:
The 1 of its kind in the world, the BESSEY GearKlamp works BIG in small spaces to provide a unique clamping solution for cramped locations, up against another object or, when reaching across something to clamp. The patented gear mechanism separates the spindle from the handle for greater clearance and is fully enclosed to keep out dust and debris. A quick release shift button for fast set-up and a rotating rail-mounted handle for final pressure application makes using the clamp very intuitive. Available in 6 in., 12 in., 16 in. and 24 in. capacities with 450 lbs. of nominal clamping force.
The 2nd worse clamp in existence. The first is Bessey's DuoKlamp.
(I have, or had and returned, nearly every clamp out there (one armed woodworking requires a ridiculous amount of clamps and vises. The modern Bessey from the past 8-10yrs have been heartbreaking as a longtime user of their products. So, for $12, you'll get what you pay for. I hope I'm wrong and you all get a great one... but... )
Wait, so do I read this right that you only have 1 arm? May I ask what clamps you do like?
My collection of clamps is rife with trigger clamps that are just plain terrible.
I got these more for those situations where the handle fouls where you are trying to clamp. They seem they would be really helpful in spreading applications, too, assuming you could swap the head around. That's rarely practical with normal bar clamps since you have to fit both clamp heads entirely inside what you want to spread and still have space to actuate it.
I now have a bunch of these clamps. There is a reason why HD is clearing out these clamps. At $38 and & $44... HD was just overpricing these and they were not selling. Even rockle* sells these cheaper at $24 and $30. On clearance... yeah I bought a bunch. They are trying to combine a F Sytle clamp with a trigger clamp. I have not used these clamps extensively but I can't see picking this clamp over a trigger clamp.
The one weakness of this clamp is the bottom clamp jaw where the ball and socket head is. The pad can pop off really easily if you bump it when trying to get it on the wood you're trying to clamp. So as far as endurance goes... you're not going to get the same mileage as regular F style clamps or pistol grip clamps.
I think these would be alot more unique if they had a deeper throat, say 6", but at 2 3/8 I will reach for a pistol grip. Or even better, use my set of wooden hands screw clamps. So as they are now, I don't see any advantage in these clamps. At clearance price, they are coming awfully close to wooden hand screw prices, which I would suggest over these if I were starting out my collection.
Brickseek showed 4, store had one. It was missing the pad that fits on the socket and also missing the entire plastic/rubber handle mechanism (that houses some sort of gearing?) that you turn to open and close the clamp. I wasn't aware of this clamp design ... but looking at this busted one it didn't strike me as very robust. Not that all clamps need to be robust, whereas some you can drop to the floor or bench and will outlive you, this one looked like it was at the fragile end of the spectrum for lighter duty and more careful handling.
Many times I've had to carefully and awkwardly tighten a F clamp due to the handle being trapped against a surface making it difficult to grip and turn and I thought a couple of these could prove useful, but after seeing the actual product I don't regret missing the deal.
YMMV.
Brickseek showed 11 at a store near me, and the automated stock checker said 10, so I decided to go. I found 3 boxes of 4 on the shelf right above the rest of the clamps. I asked an associate to bring them down, and he did but he said I probably can't buy them because they are showing $.01. I took them to the self checkout and got 12 clamps for $.12. I have heard about these deals but never got one myself. I feel like I struck gold! Now I just need a big glue up to use them on…
