The cons for this router, NO mesh support, which is where running another one as a wired AP for extra coverage or any other AP would be needed.
Only supports OpenVPN so it covers a solid 90% of all VPN users.
No Wan/LAN aggregation.
Slow SMB1 usb network drive performance.
Besides those cons this is a steal at $100.

I'm not familiar with them in the router context. What's their track record on that front?

If you get it and it works fine for what you need you, than it will continue to be fine even if it does not get a single update in the future so not really a big issue for 4-5 years. Security fixes would be nice though, but plenty of router manufactures dont even do that either. Tp-Link, Netgear, Belkin, D-Link to name a few have router models that have not been updated in years but still work fine. Only the extreme paranoid have to worry about getting hacked.
Looking at their website last firmware update was:

I've stuck with Mikrotik and while their software is great in this regard, it's also way more complex than I'd like (and have time for). Their Wi-Fi hardware is far behind others as well. I guess I'll keep an eye out for Synology or Ubiquiti deals...

For $100 this is the best deal on any router currently out there, if it was back to MSRP of around $300 or even $200 I would caution but for $100 to get something with this hardware I would not think twice to test it out, and didnt lol. I got 2 of them going to use them as high powered AP's when they show up if I dont end up using them as routers for people I know.
Couldn't resist ended up getting 3 with the 4 year warranty per unit which includes accidental damage for $18 a piece....
Im in no rush so that 1 month shipping time is not a big deal and as long as they work as reviewers said I will end up being able to use them in the future.
