So, if my math serves me right, the total should now be $1543.50 (after the new discounted price from Dell and stacking all these coupons).
This makes this deal even sweeter!

The HP Omen that was floating around for $1699 had a 1440p display with good DCI-P3 and sRGB color-accuracy and 32GB RAM, and my brother picked up one of those for his videography work. I think if the Omen is still available then it's still a better option for an editing machine, but this is a nice price regardless.
What was the fan problem?

And yes, like you said it's better suited for creators and some games. For higher frame rates and advance games, this is more suitable. Also, Alienware X-series' build quality is skies above Omen's.

The only negative I've heard about the Omen is that the hinge could be sturdier and the screen wobble is sub-optimal for the price. Cooling on it is just-about best-in-class.
That said I think a 1080p display is a better choice for laptops in general. People seem to like 1080p at 24-inches, which has similar pixel-density to 1440p at 27-inches -1080p at 17-inches is perfectly crisp, and pushing that to 1440p or 4k just makes your machine have to work harder. Native 1440p displays don't scale perfectly with 1080p content typically as well.
