Misfires generally clear immediately, if it hasn't gone away typically you're looking at wiring damage, injector problem or physical engine damage. I'd start by checking the wiring harness carefully. When you have a single cylinder misfire it's always good to swap coils rather than replace. If the mis moves its the coil, if the mis doesn't move it's not the coil.
At this price, don't expect it to work on some extended Canbus protocols. For example VW/Audi, and other vehicles that have manufacturer specific extended coding.
I think those readers are more expensive. So while these may work fine for a lot of cars, it would only pull generic codes common in the OBDII protocols. Things like Misfires, sensor signal low, Oxygen sensor errors, something short to ground etc etc. I don't think you can get too far in and modify module settings. On my Ford, you need specific software/hardware to get into the BdyCM, for example.

(Background: built a VW/Audi OBDII opto-isolated reader with my brother from schematics online around 2003, it worked with VAGCOM software that is still popular today)
$12 devices have been clearing basic codes for years.

"It can do essential work like resetting monitors, CEL issues, and clearing codes. It can also read live data, collect vehicle information, freeze data and display code definitions on the screen."

Frankly almost all readers around this price point are probably made in the same factory, they have the same menus/features and just a different colored case/screen. Its worked fine the couple times I've tried it. To clear up a few misnomers above, the likelihood of it damaging your car is extremely low, and it can clear codes, but that doesn't mean they won't come right back if it's still an issue. It should support at least basic OBD II code reading on any car made after 1996. Different cars will have different levels of functionality but all cars are required to have a minimum set of information accessible through the main OBD II protocol to cover engine and emissions stuff, OBD II was born out of EPA requirements but has blossomed into a much more useful large scale networking platform that on many cars is actually to the end users benefit if they know how to leverage it, but many of the useful features are outside of the "mandated" network protocols and require the right hardware.

I found Fakespot ratings to be so inaccurate in representing the actual end quality & experience of a product, that I've stopped making judgement calls off of them.
According to the other comments in this thread, this has been a good & reliable scanner that has worked well without issue. I haven't noticed a single negative report against it here (other than some people saying it's comparable and no better than any other cheap variant or the bluetooth scanners, the latter of which is debatable).
This is a good price for a reliable model from a good brand, so I'd say go for it if you don't already have one.

In for one.
Note that if you want to take advantage of the 30% off combo deal with the storage case, that is its own promo code and you can't use it in combination with the one posted here. You'll get better value in using the combo promo code instead of the one here, which isn't that far off in price from the listed one with its code and coupon clipped.
Don't make the same mistake I did and apply the promo code posted here if you want the case. It doesn't let me re-apply the combo promo code, so I've lost out on that deal. No hard case for me in the end. Frown

Yes, the major auto stores will let you use theirs for free, some might even clear the code for you. This is the very logic I've used for so long to avoid buying one of these. For $13, I'm finally getting one. Might not ever use it, like the portable jump starter, but good to have if you have an out-of-warranty vehicle.

Side personal memory: When I was a super-thrifter, I got a free CarMD device from a product review program. That was a reader-only (this was probably 10 years ago) and couldn't clear codes. I think it's MSRP was $99.

Absolutely the portable jumper is way more useful for the garage. You can't jump it if it can't make it to the store. Definitely can't hurt to have this available in the garage if you need simple questions answered.

Are you saying this will not work on those cars or just not ideally?

Same here. I avoided buying one because of this reason. I have a code on my car and went to O'Reilly and Autozone a few days ago, neither cleared codes. They read them and printed out a list of parts that "might" fix it. I might stop by Pep Boys to see if they can clear it before deciding I need to buy a scanner, however they often have long wait times unlike the part only stores, so it may be better getting a scanner. Maybe try Napa as well.

The point of these obd2 readers is that they work on any car. Not sure if I agree. Some cars like BMWs work with specific bluetooth apps, but they use the same general wireless readers.

Usually under the steering wheel inside the cabin there is a connector.
