If you run out you just buy more of what you need when you need it - so it's perfect for people that don't need high-priced unlimited service.
It's up to the carrier which models work with their service - ATT is known to be more restrictive.
After unlocking this likely will work with TMo since most other unlocked TF do.
I have been a Tracfone customer for well over 10 years. Every year I go out and buy a 1 year service + 1500 minutes + 1500 texts + 1.5gb data refill card from E-bay. I have been doing this for years without issues. This time it appears that the E-bay seller used stolen credit card numbers to purchase my phone refills. A couple of days after getting the refills and after leaving positive feedback my phones starting deactivating and the accounts were suspended. Contacting customer service is the WORST!!!! They were unable to do anything. I attempted to email corporate with proof that I had purchased the refills off of Ebay and my PayPal refund requests. No response from corporate and the accounts are still locked. I had 4 phones and two of them got locked. The suspended phones can not be unlocked (I failed to unlock the phones after the 60 days passed as I had no intentions of leaving Tracfone) and the phone numbers can not transfer to my new service provider because of the suspension status. I quickly unlocked and transferred the other two phones before they become suspended as well.

For Customers with non-Apple devices: TracFone will provide an unlocking code to customers who request unlocking, provided they meet the following conditions:
If the TracFone device was activated with TracFone service prior to November 23, 2021, then the device must have been active on TracFone Service for no fewer than twelve (12) months with Service Plans redeemed in no fewer than twelve (12) months.
If the TracFone device was activated with new service on the Verizon network on or after November 23, 2021, then at least sixty (60) days must have elapsed since the device was activated.
The device must be in working condition.
The device has not been reported stolen or lost, and there are no indicators of fraud
Carriers are also working on Voice over 5G as well so that they can refarm their spectrum and eventually kill off LTE, same as they did for 3G.
